A.P. Season
by Sam Fields
As the second full week of May goes by, A.P. exam season is upon us. Though almost over, this is the most stressful time of year for students at Ocean Township High School. The exams they will be taking culminate the heavy material they have been learning since September of last year! Most exams last upwards of three half hours, which goes to show how dense these courses are.
Now, if you haven’t taken an A.P. class before, you may feel a bit discouraged. So here are some key facts about A.P. classes.
A.P. stands for Advanced Placement which is offered by the College Board. This offers the chance for high school students to get the feel for a real introductory college course and take a final exam along with it.
The final exam score across the board is scored out of 5 points.
A.P. courses also offer college credit depending on what you score on the exam. The lowest you can be eligible for is a 3, but the majority of the time most colleges/universities only accept a 4 or 5.
At OTHS, there is an array of A.P. courses to take, so if you have a passion for a specific subject, you can probably find an A.P. class that covers that in some way.
By taking these classes you won’t only interact with the college curriculum, but you will also improve your vocabulary and specific content knowledge while learning how to manage your time better. You can start as a Freshman taking A.P.s, but it's never too late. Just even trying one for the experience and what it has to offer is a great option.
Just by doing quick Google searches, you can find out all that you want to know about a specific A.P. course. Also, even though the deadline for signing up for A.P. classes has passed, it’s not too late to discuss with your guidance counselor about changing your schedule.
When you choose to take an A.P. class remember: you are not alone. There are so many students taking A.P. classes which allows you to always find a peer for you to work with. In the end, when taking these high-level courses you are the only determinant of how your year will go so prepare yourself well and you will be glad you took an A.P. course here at OTHS.
