While Coach Terlecsky is the new Varsity coach, he is no stranger to Ocean Soccer. In fact, he has been on the staff since 2001 as an assistant coach, with both the Freshman and JV soccer teams. His love for the Ocean Soccer program was fostered by his 3 seasons as a Varsity player under his legendary predecessor, Tom Reilly. As a player, John was part of Ocean Township’s (and Coach Reilly’s) 1st Shore Conference Championship in 1994, and he led the team with 17 goals and garnering All Monmouth, All Shore, and All State honors in the process. John does regret not fully committing to college soccer, but is proud of his lone season at TCNJ in Fall 1998. Before his position on Coach Reilly’s staff, he spent 2 years as an assistant at Colts Neck High School, and he looks fondly on Colts Neck’s Group 1 championship in just their 2nd season as a high school program. Coach Terlecsky is also the Spartans’ Varsity basketball coach, and has been in that position for 10 seasons. He is honored to be our soccer coach and his goal is to maintain the Tradition & Excellence Coach Reilly created for our fabled program.
Coach Soares is an Ocean Township graduate in 2006 where he played goalkeeper for the Spartan soccer program from 2002-2005, under the guidance of the legendary Coach Reilly. He is proud of his high school team, which reached both the Shore Conference and Central Jersey State Final in 2005. Not only did Jeff excel as a goaltender for Ocean Soccer, but he also played two years for the New York/New Jersey Metrostars where he eventually moved up to the U-23 reserves team. He continued his playing career at North Carolina Wesleyan, where he played for the Bishops for a year before transferring to Kean University.
Coach Soares started his coaching career with Coerver Coaching and continued working soccer camps and team training for over 10 years. He earned his US Soccer National F, E, and D license to expand his knowledge of the game. His high school coaching experience began as an Assistant Varsity soccer coach for the Manasquan girls program. He then became the Assistant Varsity Boys Soccer coach at Monmouth Regional Boys and then for Long Branch Boys soccer before landing back at his alma mater. Coach Soares has now been with the Ocean Spartans as Varsity Assistant since 2012. As a coach, he’s most proud of the 2012 Shore Conference Championship and the 2015 Central Jersey Title.
Coach Steckhahn may be new to the Ocean Soccer coaching staff, but he is not new to Ocean Soccer. In fact, like the rest of our soccer staff, Coach Steckhahn is a former Spartan. He was a part of the fierce teams of 1998-2000, which included 2 Central Jersey state championships. After college, for the last 15 years, Coach Steckhahn has been both a coach and a trainer for OTUSA, our beloved travel soccer system, and even our town recreational system as well. When he is not coaching soccer, he brings his enthusiasm to Dow Avenue school, where he is a first grade teacher.
Coach Franze has been a member of the Ocean Soccer high school staff since 2014, as both a JV and presently, the Freshman soccer coach. Like our other high school coaches, Coach Franze is an Ocean alum, and he has a unique understanding of what it means to be an Ocean Soccer player, having played 3 years of Varsity for Coach Reilly and Coach Wankmuller, and also on Coach Terlecsky's freshman team. As a youth soccer player, Coach Franze was a participant in OTUSA, and his team, the Ocean Force, was a traveling team comprised of many fellow Ocean residents.
