One of my favourite parts of my highschool career thus far, has been my participation in the OCDSB´s International Certificate Program. The Program enables students to delve deeper into their interests in languages, culture, and international studies.
The program consists of three components. The first of these is Intercultural Communication, where you learn a new language, and take a cultural awareness workshop, Component two, is internationalized coursework, where students take four university level, language, world studies, social studies, or other approved courses, and internationalize two of their summative projects. The final component is international experience hours, which you can collect from overseas trips, participating in local international initiatives, or completing workshops on cultural topics that interest you. Once you've completed all three components you create a summative project, highlighting your learning and experience throughout your time in the program.
The International Certificate Program offers so many opportunities to learn, and travel. Last year, I participated in the Euro challenge, and had the opportunity to meet foreign service workers from Europe, as well as professors from prospective universities. Last year, my team consisted of Sam MacGillivary, Jill Reeves, and I ended up taking home cash prizes. Euro Challenge isn't the only opportunity available to ICP students. In the international certificate program, universities and OCDSB offer scholarships related to global citizenship.
Mme. Van Zijl, the ICP advisor at John McCrae, believes “The ICP is an amazing program that increases your interest, knowledge and appreciation of other cultures, languages, and international experiences. Students who are part of this program will make many new friendships, learn a new language, develop leadership skills, increase their global awareness, and participate in countless activities that will help them become a motivated and engaged global citizen.” If you are interested in joining the International Certificate Program, contact Mme.
