Today, on Tuesday April 18th, the Cedarview Middle School Concert Band came to John McCrae Secondary School as many of the players are planning on joining our music program when they come to the school next year. This day was primarily run by our music exec. and was a tremendous success!
When the grade eights first arrived, we started off by playing an icebreaker game of Squirt, to get to know each other's names. Instead of saying ‘squirt’ during your turn you would say the name of your opponent.
After a quick lunch break, we broke off into sectionals. Sectionals are where everyone divides into small groups with people that play the same instrument as them to practice their parts separately. We had six different sectional groups today, saxophones, trumpets, brass, percussion, clarinets and flutes. Each group was taught by a senior student, and they helped the Cedarview players improve their playing by giving them tips, adjusting their embouchure and helping them get in tune.
Finally, we all went into the cafeteria to play together. The family and friends of the Cedarview players were invited to come and watch us, and there was a great turn out. The JMSS band performed Spitfire and Chasing Sunlight, two pieces that we have been practicing for some time. The Cedarview band then performed Midnight Madness and Midnight Sky, followed by Star Wars, which the JMSS band played with them.
This event was so much fun, and I know we at JMSS can not wait for the Cedarview players to join our band next year.
