The John McCrae curling teams have had an incredible season this year.
The teams consisted of Gavin Baird, Matthew Bessuille, Matthew Ma, James Mooder, Samriddha Negi and David Roberts on the boys team being coached by Dan Baird, as well as Kiana Hoger, Maren Jorgensen, Evelyn Smith, Abby Thompson, Katie Roberts and Lauren Spargo on the girls, coached by Kelsey Brown and Stacey Seymour.
They started the season off incredibly strong, with the boys beating Nepean High School 5-0 and the girls beating De La Salle E. 5-2.
The boys were undefeated for the first two months of the season and the only loss that the girls had was the third game of the season against St. Peter on December 22nd.
Both teams won 7 out of the 8 games that they played during the regular season before playoffs. Some game highlights were the boys team beating St. Paul High School 14-1, and the girls beating St. Paul High School team 10-1.
As both teams ranked in the top 3 in Ottawa, they advanced to the quarter finals, where sadly, the boys lost to Nepean High School. Though they would not be competing in the semi’s, they did have an amazing season overall and had a winning percentage of 81%.
The girls did end up advancing after beating De La Salle E. 7-2 on February 28, that game being played by Maren Jorgensen, Evelyn Smith, Abby Thompson and Kiana Hoger. While competing in the semi-finals on March 2nd, they beat the previously undefeated team from St. Peter High School 10-1. Playing that game was Maren Jorgensen, Evelyn Smith, Abby Thompson and Katie Roberts.
The finals will be held on Wednesday, March 8th, at the Sportsplex, and as of right now, the girls have a winning percentage of 88%.
During this season both teams have played extremely well and have made it very far. Let’s hope for another successful season in 2024.
