If you’re a student at John McCrae, an integral part of your high school experience will be going to Sachi’s for a bite to eat. Located in the Walter Baker Center and easily accessible through the second floor, Sachi’s has been serving the hungry students of JMSS for fourteen years now.
Walter Baker’s Sachi’s is part of a larger franchise in Ottawa, with thirty six locations around the city in total. It is run by “Mr. Sachi” (as he is known by students), who opened it fourteen years ago. He was inspired to open the business because of his “pre-existing love for Sachi’s franchise as a whole.”
Mr. Sachi believes that “the most important thing about owning the business is to make people happy by keeping them well fed, but also to profit like any successful venture.”
Unfortunately, when the pandemic hit, Sachi’s started to struggle financially. Like many other food places around the world, Sachi’s had to close as it was not an essential service. It was a very dark time for the business since an incredible amount of money was required to re-open again in 2022. Costs like cleaning, repainting, and restocking food and drinks were hard to manage with so much profit lost from the closure.
However, Sachi’s is here again. With no imminent threat of a lockdown or brand new global pandemic on its way, Sachi’s serves our students and community as both a great spot to buy a French vanilla cappuccino or poutine and an inseparable part of John McCrae’s history and future.
