Though Riverside South S.S. is not in close proximity to an Ottawa Public Library branch, there are nearby options and the Bookmobile!
Generally, having a public library card allows students to enjoy the benefits of access to a city-wide collection of books and additional digital resources.
The Bookmobile is a great option, too! Every Wednesday from 2:15 pm - 5:30 pm and from 6:30 pm - 8:00 pm, the Bookmobile will be in Riverside South (4310 Shoreline Road). No appointment is needed to return items or pick up holds at the Bookmobile. The Bookmobile will offer browsing of a small collection at all stops. The Bookmobile service includes two vehicles, each with its own unique collection. Bookmobile items are not-Holdable in order to ensure that all our bookmobile communities have equitable access to new and exciting materials.
bring photo ID and proof of address to the library staff at the public library
fill in the library card registration form
NOTE: if you are under 16 years old, you need a parent's/guardian's signature on your form
if you already have an OPL card, there's no need for a new one - all you need to do is have it renewed (bring ID!)
look for and borrow books in the OPL libraries
check books out at the self-checkout machine or with a librarian
access OPL services like printing, copying, wifi, and other technology
at the OPL branches, use unique items like musical instruments, digital cameras, museum passes, laser cutters, 3D printers etc.
Great question!
SmartLibrary brings together the collections available at 12 libraries in the Nation Capital Region, and with a SmartLibrary card, you can borrow materials from any of the participating libraries. Click here or speak to someone at your local OPL branch to find out more!
NOTE: Each library has specific rules about how to access these materials; card members are responsible for the management of their materials and any fines or charges that may result.
OPL (public library) books also incur replacement fees if not returned - even if the books were taken out for a school project.
If you put books on hold and don't pick them up within 7 days of being notified that they're ready, there is a $1 re-shelving fee per item; your book will then be returned to circulation.
You can read more about fines, fees, and loan periods here.
