The Ritual, is a 2018 horror film directed by David Bruckner, The Ritual is a great horror film that has raised the bar for all suspense/psychological horror films when it was released. This film contains multiple scenes of gore and extreme scares throughout the whole movie, straight from the start it throws you right into the horror/gore of the film and it continues almost all the way to the end. This film takes place in a mountain forest in Swedish inhabited by The Jotunn, which hunts down our four main characters throughout the film.
This film's attention to detail is incredible, but it's so well done you don't even realize foreshadowing is happening until the second time watching it. Although the cinematography and acting in the film was great there are lots of plot holes in the film. At times there is so much going on that you forget other things then they are brought back up later in the film almost making it impossible to remember everything that happens unless you watch it a few times, along with missing information in the film there are very easy situations that can be solved in the film that were dragged out, usually that's ok in most film but this one did it for far to long.
The acting is a solid 8/10. The lines could have been delivered a bit better and the physical acting in the film could have been better but it was still very good. The scenery was 9.9/10. Filmed in a real forest and not using green screen for most of the film but when you see the real “creature” you can tell it was put in after using special effects compared to the rest of the real forest behind it. The lines are 10/10. For a netflix original film the lines are amazingly spoken although they were a little forced at times they were all done amazingly. They also had amazing moments of silence where nature filled the scenes with more authenticity making it seem more immersing, on top of this it was filmed in an actual mountain in Romania, The Carpathian Mountains of Romania, where the cast and film crew had to do the hiking you see in film to get from place to place so the tiredness you see is genuine.
The director and the producer teaming up for this film was astounding. The way the movie came out was and still is amazing. The work of David Bruckner, Andy Serik, Richard Holmes and Jonathan Cavendish came out as one of the best films of the year. All and all it’s a 9/10.
