Christmas Cookie Traditions

Every family has their own holiday tradition. Big or small. They are all important to us. My family has many traditions, one of which starts early December. For many years, my grandmother was the one taking on the task all on her own, but this year, it is time the family tradition is passed down to the next generations.
Our family tradition is to make at least 1000 cookies for Christmas. My grandmother, whom I call Oma, which is the German word for grandma, would start baking 2-3 weeks before Christmas. Typically making 9 to 10 different types of cookies. Always trying a new one every year. We would keep most, but many would be gifted to other family members and friends. My family and I would normally finish all the cookies no later than mid-February.
With so many recipes, everyone has picked their favourites. As you can probably guess from the picture, raisin cookies are the most popular. My Opa’s (German word for grandpa), sister’s and uncle's favourite cookies are raisin cookies. Mine and my mom’s are the rum balls, which are made from the cookies that did not turn out as well. Over the past few years my Oma had to make extra batches of cookies just to have enough to make the rum balls because all of hers would look and taste amazing!
This year my mom and I have taken on the tradition, well at least partially. My Oma is still making hundreds of cookies, but now so are we in order to reach that 1000 cookie goal! As of December 12th, my mom and I have made 471 cookies. My Oma has made 775 cookies in the last week alone (her oven was broken so she started baking later than usual!) and has finished baking for the Christmas season. This means we have surpassed the goal already!! Even with the hearty efforts of my sweet toothed family! We celebrate Advent every Sunday, four weeks prior to Christmas eve, so some of those delicious cookies have been enjoyed during that time and others are eaten even before they’ve cooled on their baking sheets. We still plan to make at least two different types of cookies - mini pecan tarts and snickerdoodles. In the end, I have no doubt we will surpass 1300 cookies!
Whatever traditions your family celebrates, enjoy them. From my family to yours,
FRÖLICHE WEINACHTEN!
