In mid-October, the Grade 9 ComTech students of Mr. Tenthorey had their very first in-person Photography Field Trip! This field trip was held at the Bruce Pit Dog Park in the West-end of Ottawa and was supervised by both Mr. Tenthorey and a student’s relative.
Students took time out of their Block A and Block B classes to be a part of this morning field trip, and got back right in time for their afternoon classes. Although in person field trips are still pretty new to OCV, students were chatting and bonding from the very start! Megan Deng, one of the few students who participated, shared, “Seeing everyone in person – including my teacher, made this field trip so much more fun! Meeting friends in person that I’ve only ever met in OCV means so much to me and I really do hope that we can enjoy this whole experience again soon :) ...I had a very good time on this field trip and I really do hope to see everyone again!”
Students participated in a variety of different activities such as a nature walk and a group scavenger hunt, and from each activity we learned about the different factors and concepts that come into play with photography. “It was nice being able to learn how to frame pictures, changing the focus and playing with different camera angles,” says Youssra El-Zaylaa. “Not to mention that it was nice meeting new people!”
For the scavenger hunt, students formed groups of three and were given around twenty minutes to complete a list of challenges by both finding and photographing objects throughout the forest.
The winning group got a whole pack of Oreos to themselves, and we all got to share Oreos and juice boxes before going on our nature walk. All of us were laughing, sharing stories, and also getting scared by the amount of dogs there were throughout the field trip!
We all bonded over the nature walk and took such beautiful photos throughout. We saw some fungus growing on trees, bowls that we presumed were catching sap from the trees, as well as a burr hole and nest that that Mr. T actually pointed out!
“It was a fantastic way of meeting you all and spending time in the beautiful outdoors :)” says Mr. T. We are all hoping that another field trip will take place before this semester will end and hopefully one that is more on the East-end for more students to partake in this wonderful in-person experience! As for those who are taking Mr. Tenthorey’s Grade 9 Communications Technology class next semester; you are going to be in amazing hands and will have a great time :)
