STUDENTS - Would you like to submit your work for publication?
Scroll down to find writing prompts to get you started.
Remember that you can also submit videos (e.g., Ted Talks), audio recordings (e.g., podcasts), and other media forms for our paper.
Be sure to give access to your work - share with Ms. Smith (alisha.smith@ocdsb.ca) and Ms. Walker (gillian.walker@ocdsb.ca).
STUDENTS - Pitch an idea! Would you like to discuss your idea for an article before writing it? Connect with us. We're happy to help.
TEACHERS - Do you have assignments you would like us to showcase in the paper? Would you like to advertise your club?
For the Lifestyle section, we welcome articles on food, travel, fashion & style, and sports & recreation.
Food - Do you like to cook or bake? Share a favourite recipe, but add a personal touch. Tell the story behind the recipe, or add any special instructions of your own. Include photos of the process and the finished product to make your readers' mouths water!
Travel - Have you visited other parts of Canada or other countries? Share your experience! Tell us about the best sites, the most interesting experiences, or the best restaurants. Include photos to take your readers on a journey with you!
Fashion & Style - Covid Couture: Fashion DOs and DON'Ts in school.
Sports & Recreation - Do you have a favourite winter sport? Write an article about it! Tell us what equipment you need, where are the best spots to do this sport, and anything else important!
For the Student Clubs section, we welcome articles on school news, clubs, and local, national, or international news.
Idea - Are you a member of a club at OCV Secondary? We are hoping to build a clubs section with articles on as many clubs as possible. Get in touch with us to collaborate on the article, or write one yourself! Include background information on your club, the club's purpose or mission, quotes from student members, and info on how to join.
For the Truth and Reconciliation section, we welcome opinion pieces on any topic, letters to the editor or responses to previously published opinion pieces, and visual expressions of opinion, such as art or political cartoons.
Idea - If you don't know much about politics, ask your teachers and your parents about it. If you can draw cartoons, see if you can create a political satire, which pokes fun at a politician or issue in order to express a peaceful (albeit mean-spirited) protest.
Idea - Do you have a really strong opinion about something that you've seen or experienced? Maybe you've seen bad drivers on the road, or you think the city could do a better job clearing the snow from your sidewalk, or your angered by all the disposable face masks littering the ground all over the city. Choose a topic and write a rant! Better yet, film yourself speaking your rant so we can hear the emotion in your voice!
For the Arts & Entertainment section, we welcome submissions of visual art, creative writing, poetry, photography, as well as reviews or articles about movies, music, books, and gaming.
Creative Writing - Do you like to write short stories? Now's your chance to share your work with others. Are you a poet? Submit poems on any topic.
Visual Art - Send us images of your drawing, painting, or sculpture.
Music - Do you sing or play an instrument? Submit a video of yourself performing your favourite piece!
Photography - Are you a photographer? Do you like to edit photos or create collages? Send us your pics!
Book Reviews - Have you read an amazing book recently that you just think everyone would love? Write a review. Let everyone know what the book is about, but be careful not to include any spoilers!
For the Puzzles, Puns, & Pics section, we welcome submissions of jokes, puns, comics, brain teasers, puzzles of all kinds, including number puzzles, word puzzles, and picture puzzles, and cute pictures of your cat.
Picture Puzzles - Can you create a "spot the difference" puzzle with two nearly identical images? You can do this as a hand drawing or a computer image - it's up to you!
