Over the past twenty years, there have been three distinct live-action cinematic renditions of Spider-Man. First, we have the classic Spider-Man from the Sam Raimi trilogy, portrayed by Tobey Maguire. Next, is the Amazing Spider-Man portrayed by Andrew Garfield. Last, there is Tom Holland's rendition of Spider-Man, who is linked with the MCU (Marvel Cinematic Universe). This article will attempt to evaluate the three Spider-Men by their character to determine which one is the best Spider-Man.
Spider-Man (2002), Spider-Man 2 (2004), Spider-Man 3 (2007), Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021)
Tobey Maguire was the first to portray Spider-Man in the 2000s, and holds a place in many hearts. Of the three, Maguire is the oldest but also the most iconic. As for the best Spider-Man, some (on Rotten Tomatoes) would even say, “It was Tobey Maguire, with his three Spider-Man films directed by Sam Raimi, who kicked off the superhero movie era as we know it and respect must be paid.”
Maguire hits the mark with the nerdy archetype of Peter and accurately portrays the struggle of leading a double life. Of the two, many feel this is the best Mary-Jane and Peter Parker love match, especially following their iconic kiss.
Unfortunately, Maguire’s rendition of Spider-Man lacked quippy humor, a commonly believed vital part of Peter Parker's personality, although he accurately portrays Peter’s struggles.
Maguire and Raimi managed to craft Peter as a relatable human being who just happens to be put in extraordinary circumstances, and Maguire plays to that element perfectly.
The Amazing Spider-Man (2012), The Amazing Spider-Man 2 (2014), Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021)
Andrew Garfield's Spider-Man is often forgotten. Some might even say the underdog. After the first two movies were such failures, his third movie was cancelled. While Garfield himself portrayed Spider-Man excellently, unfortunately, the writing and directing of the films were horrendous.
Garfield portrays Peter as darker and edgier. He also carries himself with a swagger, which according to reviews turns some people off.
By far, Garfield has the best sense of humour, delivering quippy phrases, adding to his stylization of Peter. Perhaps one of his best comedic lines is delivered ironically during his capture of a none-too-smart car thief, who uncomprehendingly thinks he can best Spider-Man and his webbing by drawing his knife.
He also has the best chemistry on screen, with Gwen Stacey (Emma Stone), creating by far the best romance of any Spider-Man.
Garfield has the physicality of Spider-Man, being the most realistic. Maguire is too old and too bulky, and Holland is not tall enough. Garfield has an arachnid-like body, tall and slender.
He also shows a lot of emotional vulnerability/range. This is evident after he sneaks into Gwen's bedroom and confesses his guilt over Connor's transformation and conveying that he's learning to embrace the responsibility his Uncle Ben had spoken about. The vulnerability of his performance allows the audience in on the pain and the growth he's experiencing.
"My weakness, it’s small knives!”- Andrew Garfield, The Amazing Spider-Man
Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017) and Spider-Man: Far From Home (2019), Spider-man: No Way Home (2021)
Tom Holland is widely regarded as the best Spider-Man. Being the modern Spider-Man, Holland is the youngest of the 3. He was the only one to still be a teenager during filming, being only 19 years old when he first came to the role.
His nervous, frantic energy strikes the perfect balance of youthful innocence and adolescent self-discovery. Holland best exemplifies the youthful liveliness of Peter Parker. Holland is also the most relatable Spider-Man because of our insight into his teenage problems and internal conflicts.
Holland also has the most notable arc, be it due to the number of movies he has been in, which shows him growing from a naïve, impulsive teenager to a young mature man.
Holland also had the vastest audience appeal, Sony and Marvel striking a deal, incorporating Spider-Man into the MCU.
Unfortunately, some feel that Holland's rendition of Spider-Man wasn’t as fulfilling as others.
“His lack of independence has disappointed some fans that believe he has been painted as Iron Man’s sidekick rather than his character. “- As stated by Papyrus.
Overall each rendition of Spider-Man has its strengths and weaknesses. Each of the actors portray Peter in a different way. While the younger generation tend to lean towards Tom Holland as the best Spider-Man, and older ones lean towards the nerdy Tobey Maguire, Andrew Garfield is often forgotten.
