Grade 9 De-streamed (ENG1D or ENG1W come fall 2023)

This course is a compulsory course that requires no prerequisite.  At the completion of the course, students will continue in the De-streamed or Locally Developed stream in grade 10 depending on their individual pathway.

This course allows students entering high school an opportunity to explore meaningful connections between themselves, what they encounter in texts, and the world around them.  Students are introduced to a variety of literary, informational, and media texts that recognize and reflect the importance of identity, culture and diversity in the classroom.   Students also learn the most effective reading and writing processes, and are given opportunities to choose what they read and what they write about so that they can discover and pursue their own interests and become increasingly effective communicators.

Sample tasks include: formal and informal writing tasks; a literary essay; “Reading for Me” (personal book selection and oral book chat); oral listening activities; a creative media product or poetry product.
