Hi everybody! First of all, I wanted to thank you so much for coming to this show. This has been rattling around my head for just over a year now, and it’s incredible and also surreal to see it finally coming to life onstage.
When I first came up with the idea for this production, we were in the midst of a messy presidential election (understatement, I know, but bear with me here), and I was struggling to think of a way to combat the rising hatred I was seeing. I’m a writer, so I could write an essay. I’m a dancer, so I could probably make a little dance. But neither of those options sounded like they’d do enough, for me. I needed a way to reach people, to look them in the eyes and tell them a story that might change their minds. So, I turned to my all-time favorite method of protest: theatre.
I drew parallels between Rosencrantz and Guildenstern and the underprivileged groups I see in the world. The characters are constantly left out of the story, painted as clowns, and ignored. Despite doing everything exactly right, they are sentenced to death. Sound familiar? So, obviously, I felt like it was a story that desperately needed to be told. And I couldn’t have asked for a better group to tell it with.
This cast took my vision and ran with it. They trusted every single one of my insane ideas, believed me when I told them it would actually work, and even listened to my hippy-dippy rambles about the infamous box. I could go on and on, but unfortunately I’ve given myself a word limit, so I’ll move on to my incredible creative team.
Due to the minimalist set, this play’s world was created almost entirely by lights, sounds, props, and costumes. And none of that would have been as absolutely mindblowing as it is without Emily, Brian, Molly, Briar, and Owen. They made Rosencrantz and Guildenstern’s story come alive, and I could not be more thankful for having such a team of artists surrounding me.
And I probably wouldn’t even be here without the support of Maya and Hannah, my phenomenal stage management team. Thank you for keeping track of everything and holding us all together. And, Molly and Hannah—thank you. For everything, but most especially going along with this mess and creating the most gorgeous box. I know you doubted it, but you did it anyway. The best friends I could ever ask for.
Last but certainly not least, thank you to Zeph. My assistant director, warmup leader, brunch shenanigan cofounder, and, of course, friend. You completely prevented this show from going off the rails (and off the topic). We couldn’t have done it without you.
As you all watch the show tonight, take the time to think about the people in your life who may be impacted by this administration and the chaos of our world. Help them. Find them a way out of the box. And, if all else fails, just be there to hold their hand. We all need a Rosencrantz. We all need a Guildenstern. And, at the end of the day, you’ll find it’s far easier to face the world with someone at your side. Thank you all so, so much for being here. Enjoy Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead!
Sincerely,
India-Mae Fraser

We acknowledge that this production is taking place on stolen Indigenous land. This land, that was claimed for the Oberlin Colony and Oberlin College Institute in 1833, actually belongs to the Erie, Wyandot, and Kaskaskia peoples. The land was stolen from them through ethnic cleansing and forcible displacement. We recognize and honor all the lives lost, and all those who continue to steward this land.
This show tells the story of the side characters, the ones out of the spotlight and attention of the public. In this way, Rosencrantz and Guildenstern might understand and empathize with the fact that the Erie, Wyandot, and Kaskaskia peoples have had their history largely ignored. Only recently did we begin the work of recognizing, remembering, and honoring the Indigenous stewards of this land, both past and present. And it is an ongoing project. We all must commit to learning how to better understand and protect both this land and her rightful stewards. We invite everyone to do their own research into ways to learn and help the Indigenous people of their areas, as it is up to each one of us to make a difference. For those looking to learn more about the current state of the Erie, Wyandot, and Kaskaskia people, we recommend researching the Seneca Cayuga Nation (Erie descendants), Wyandotte Nation of Oklahoma (present-day Wyandot), and the Peoria Tribe of Kansas (Kaskaskia descendants).
(Alphebetical)
John! He/they! Claudius! John is a first year from Silver Spring, Maryland. This is his first OSTA show but has done two theater shows at Oberlin. You might have seen him as Amanda from Miss Ermintrude's Guide to Etiquette. Or Julius Caesar from...Julius Caesar. They had an amazing time working with the cast and crew and would like to thank them for making the whole process fun! He would also like to thank their partner for always supporting them throughout. He hopes that you enjoy the show!
Ratatosk (they/he) is a newly transferred Oberlin second year from Brooklyn, NY. With prior Theater experience in both middle school and high school, they are intending to major in Theater. This is their first OSTA production, and they have had the best time working with such amazing people. They cannot thank the cast and crew of Rosencrantz and Guildenstern enough for being so welcoming, inclusive, and definitely not encouraging codependent relationships. It has been a joy to be a part of such a fantastic production, and they hope to be part of many more.
Sebastian Cruz (Hamlet)
Sebastian (he/him) is a third-year theater student, actor, psuedo-journalist, occasional playwright, especially occasional director and all-around, full-time dude. His theater career may have peaked in middle school but that hasn't discouraged him from appearing in Main Stage productions such as Or, and My Dead Boyfriend Is a Robot, as well as numerous other OMTA/OSTA productions throughout his time at Oberlin. He is thrilled to bring some darkness into the light that is Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead (though Hamlet himself may not be too amused.)
Natalie (she/her) is absolutely thrilled to be making her Oberlin theater debut as a second semester senior! Playing Guildenstern is the first role she's had since junior year of high school in Frankfort Kentucky (before COVID!) because she arrived at college and became busy with the Varsity Volleyball Team, being The Student Body President, a Peer Advising Leader, a Democracy Fellow, and other things. Natalie is a Politics and French double major with a Hispanic Studies minor. Her previous theater experience from another lifetime includes To Kill a Mockingbird (Mayella Ewell), Clue: On Stage (Yvette), Radium Girls (Mrs Roeder), and being a child actor in multiple professional Shakespeare in the Park plays in Kentucky! Natalie hopes y'all love the show as much as she's loved playing Rosencrantz-- I mean, Guildenstern... (to be continued).
Ella Erdahl (she/her) is weeks away from completing her undergraduate education with majors in Comparative Literature, Hispanic Studies, and Creative Writing. Her illustrious theatre career began at the age of 9 as munchkin #4 in the Wizard of Oz. At Oberlin, she has been seen on stage in Julius Caesar (Marullus/Metellus/Young Cato), The Bald Soprano (Mrs. Martin), and Portal (Chelle #2).
Cloude Fewkes (they/them) is a first year theater and sociology major from Cary, North Carolina, and Oberlin College And Conservatory's best recorder player (don't look that up). While they don't usually enjoy being trapped in little boxes, their mom told them college is for going out of their comfort zone, so here they are! Before the box, you may have seen Cloude as Daughter (The Trail To Oregon!) and Margaret (Horse Girls). They would like to thank Talia Richer, and they hope you enjoy the show!
Eilan Lee (they/he/she) is a first-year from Suwon, South Korea. This is their first time performing in OSTA, and they're excited to be part of such a wonderful production ^_^!
Sam (they/them) is a fourth year comparative American studies major from Seattle, Washington. This is their first stage acting experience, but their film credits include BIKE (dir. Sam Sortino, '24) and KISS ME AGAIN (dir. Orson Abram, '25). They like movies and also music and also books.
Imogen Russell (she/they) is an undeclared first year hoping to major in Film and Comparative American Studies and a couple minors, which she hasn't figured out yet. On campus, she is involved with Young Democratic Socialists of America, First Year Committee, Sound Painting, the Cult Classics Exco, and is co-editor in chief of Sassafras Magazine (@sassmag). In her free time she loves hanging out with friends, watching movies on The Criterion Channel (if you get it you get it), going to concerts and reading Richard Siken's poetry. She wants to thank her family and friends as well as her cast and crew. She hopes you enjoy the show!
Erika Scharf (Gertrude/Tragedian)
Erika (she/her) is a fourth year English and Gender Studies major from Niles, Ohio. Past Oberlin shows include Delaney Daniels and All These Amazing Things (Ensemble/An Amazing Thing) and The Lightning Thief (Clarisse). Past non-Oberlin shows include Rent, Peter Pan, Annie, and Cinderella. This is her first time not doing a musical, so she’s a little worried she might instinctively break out into song in the middle of the show. She would like to thank the cast and crew for creating such a welcoming and fun environment, and she hopes you enjoy the show!
Evelyn (she/they) is the most awesomest 5'4" third year theater and musical studies major with brown hair, blue eyes, and size 8 1/2 feet in town. She has been in The World is Only Magic and All in Your Mind in the past, and is also the dramaturg for Eye's Up Theatre's upcoming production of Antigone. Thanks to the cast and crew of this production, and to her beautiful son Baby Cow for his beautiful moosic and unwavering support. Enjoy the show!
India-Mae Fraser (Director)
India-Mae (she/they) is absolutely thrilled to be making her Oberlin directing debut with OMTA!!! (Also, to finally be a part of an OMTA show… it’s been a long time coming) She is a second year theatre major and professional menace. She’s so incredibly proud of this cast and crew, and super thankful for all their hard work. She would like to thank her phenomenal parents, and give special appreciation to her sisters for letting her be the coolest sibling. Please enjoy Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead!!!
Zeph Samdperil (Assistant Director)
Zeph (they/she/he) assistant directed the "theater play" you are about to see, are in the middle of seeing, or have seen. A "theater play" is when a whole bunch of people lie to a whole bunch of other people, often for multiple hours. You can also think of "theater plays" as movies but for liberals. Zeph helped with this particular "theater play" by offering ideas on how to lie better and where to do it. She also told the liars things they already knew, such as "make sure to learn your lines" and "don't put that in your mouth". Zeph hopes you enjoy the show, I guess.
Maya Poduje (Stage Manager)
Fresh out of high school, Maya (she/her) is a supporter of the arts in all forms. Currently working to make the dreams of her directors and actors come true. She hopes that everyone in this production goes on to do great things, whether that be for the sake of art, passion, or both!
Hannah Everett (Asst. Stage Manager)
Hannah Everett (she/her) thought she was done with theatre forever when she graduated high school. Then she got a text asking her to do run crew for OSTA's All in Your Mind last Spring... It was all downhill from there. She is a second year Creative Writing major from Westfield, New Jersey. Hannah has had the absolute best time working on Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead this Spring and would like to thank the entire cast and crew for making it such an amazing return to doing the entire process of a show!
Emily Zinner (Lighting Designer)
Emily Zinner (she/her) is a second year theater major who has been doing lighting for nearly a decade. While debating the merits of existing in a superliminal space, she has also done lighting for Ubu Roi, Peerless (Lab Series), Horse Girls, Dracula, Julius Caesar (Lab Series), Rocky Horror, and will be doing lighting for ODC next week. She hopes you enjoy the show.
Briar Shear (Costume Designer/Asst. Lighting Designer)
Briar (they/them) is a first year not-theater-major (yet) and not-linguistics-major (yet). If they were a character in Hamlet, they would be Osric, because he has a fancy hat. You've seen their costumes previously in OMTA's The Trail to Oregon! You've seen their lighting previously never because they've never done lighting before! They've had a great time working on this show and they hope you have a great time watching it!
Molly Reiser (Scenic Designer)
Molly (she/her) is a second year creative writing major from Michigan, and she’s very excited to be a part of this production of Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead. This is her fourth show with OMTA/OSTA or maybe fifth? She read this play in high school and she thought it was okay. A little weird. It will be better now. She encourages you all to admire the incredibly complex, detailed, and intricate scenic design that she worked very hard on.
Brian Oliveira (Sound Designer)
Brian Oliveira (he/she/they) is a first year who has been trapped in liminal voids where time and space hold no meaning on repeated occasions! Her past Oberlin credits include Julius Caesar (Decius) and Deficiency (Sound Design), as well as playing in the pit orchestra for Legally Blonde next weekend! (He has also not gotten much sleep for the past several weeks). They are very excited to be working on another OSTA show and would like to thank the whole cast and crew for being awesome.
Evil Molly Reiser (Props Designer)
Evil Molly Reiser (she/her) is a second year evil creative writing major from evil Michigan, also known as Ohio. This is her something show with OMTA. She’s never read this play and she never will because she hates Shakespeare and she hates theatre. She did the props for this show.
North Lovelady-Allen (Intimacy Coordinator)
North Lovelady-Allen (he/they) is a first year from Takoma Park, Maryland studying theater and psychology. They recently performed in OSTA's production of Deficiency, and are so excited to be the intimacy coordinator for both Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead and Legally Blonde this semester. They are so thrilled to be a part of the team who made this production possible, and they hope you enjoy the show!
