✳️ Offering & Schedule:

Classes held at FMA: 5851 MacArthur Blvd Oakland, CA. Families that receive a space will receive free classes through May 30, 2022.

  • Age 8-13 classes: Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday from 4-4:30pm

  • 14+ classes: Monday and Wednesday; 6:30-7:30 and Thursday 6:15-7:15 (Accepting 2 students Ages 14-18)


📣 Cost: The Oakland REACH pays for all courses and test fees through May 30, 2022. Families must purchase a ghi at a discounted rate of $35 to participate. FMA will work with families who may need financial assistance.

✳️ Offering & Schedule:

  • Grades 1-5: Album Art (20 spaces) (Drawing & Painting)

Students will learn how visual art can be used as an expression of performing art. Throughout the course of the class, students will reimagine their favorite songs as album art. Students will learn how to use their imaginations in concert with various drawing and painting techniques to create artworks that evoke creativity, emotion, and memory.

March 16-April 27 No class week of April 4

Wednesday 4:30-5:30pm

  • Grades 6-9: Concept Art and the Untold Narratives with Eugene R. Young (Drawing)

Students will have the opportunity to create concept art influenced by the stories and culture that inspire them most. Throughout the course of the class, students will be introduced to the five basic solid forms used in character design and use creative writing strategies and an iterative design process to develop original characters. The students will also learn how to consider and identify the relationship between character and environment in a game world. The class will be lead by an established concept artist who will also discuss the various career paths available to concept artists.

When: March 17- April 28. No class week of April 4.

  • Grade 1-2: Slime Detectives

Do you love to play with slime? Have you ever designed your own slime? In this online afterschool program, you will make several different kinds of slime and explore how slime changes depending on the ingredients. What makes the stickiest slime? The stretchiest slime? The fluffiest slime? As a slime engineer, you’ll use what you figure out to design and revise until you create your perfect slime.

When: March 15-April 26. No class week of Apr 4, 2022

  • Grades 3-5: Crime Science Detectives

Do you have what it takes to solve a crime? In the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, toilet paper was a hot commodity. A new shipment was delivered to The Lawrence Supermarket Friday night, and on Saturday morning, it was gone before the supermarket opened. Who stole the toilet paper?! Was it Willa, the store manager, who had been there when the shipment arrived? Or perhaps it was Lou, the reliable janitor who is consistently out of supplies?! Or maybe it was Archie, the local artist, who is using toilet paper as their new form of artistic expression? Our criminal would have gotten away with it if it weren't for you meddling kids! As a junior forensic detective, you'll learn to use fingerprints, chromatography ink analysis, DNA, and other clues as evidence to catch this toilet paper thief!

When: March 16-April 27 No class week of April 4

  • Grades 6-8: Storytelling with Data

Have you wondered why some groups of people or neighborhoods are more impacted by COVID-19 than others? Or why health hazards are more concentrated in communities of color than in white neighborhoods? In this course, you will learn data science skills in order to analyze air quality, health indicators, housing policies, and other factors that influence the well-being of people in the areas around you. You will also learn how to produce a multimedia data story that calls upon others to join you in environmental and social action.

When: March 17- May 12. No class week of April 4.

4:00-5:30p.m. on Thursdays

Online Mentoring for Grades 6-12

Freedom Soul Media Education Initiatives in collaboration with the Black Literary Collective has developed a mentoring program that will support youth. Sessions end by May 15, 2022.


Mentees will be expected to participate in three virtual sessions (two 1 on 1 sessions and one small group session) with their mentors every month.

Online Mentoring for Grades 6-12. Families will choose a consistent time with FSMEI between Tuesday-Thursday afternoons from 4:30-6:30pm for mentor/mentee sessions.
