Emergency codes and procedures provide an effective means of ensuring that you receive a single message, letting you know that there is a need for an urgent response without unnecessarily alerting or alarming patients and visitors.
Code 99: Medical Emergency
Procedure for Agitated/Combative Individual
Doctor Silver: Clinician/Staff Member Needs Urgent Assistance
1.) Initiate the code over the PA (public address) system by dialing 680. Wait for the tone, then dial 80. After the tone:

3.) Repeat the message 3 TIMES

In addition to the Code Team, SHC Medical Services Clinical Staff, and any and all appropriately trained SHC staff, in proximity to the location of the Code 99, should respond to the code as first responders. These additional Clinical Staff Members may be relieved to return to their scheduled duties when the Code Team arrives and they are dismissed by the Team Leader.
An agitated individual is a person who is confronted (cursing, yelling, argumentative), but is not threatening or attempting to physically harm staff, responders, and/or bystanders
A combative individual is a person who is actively threatening or attempting to physically harm staff, responders, and/or bystanders
If you encounter an agitated/combative individual, do this if you feel unsafe:
Push the panic alarm, if available
Call NYU Campus Safety Command Center by dialing x8-2222
The Dr. Silver alert is for use only in circumstances when you are in urgent need of assistance, and are unable to leave your office or enclosed work area. For example, a patient has blocked you from exiting your office or enclosed work area.
If you feel unsafe, the first step towards safety in most circumstances, should be to leave the area immediately and dial 911.
If you are in need of urgent assistance, call the Wellness Exchange (x3-9999), identify yourself, ask if Dr. Silver is available and provide your location (your office number, suite, and/or building)
After taking your call, the Wellness Exchange Counselor will immediately notify 911 and Campus Safety, and a Crisis Response Counselor will respond to your location for further assessment and management of the situation
