After completing your hiring paperwork with the SPS Office of Finance and Administration, please be sure to activate your NYU NetID and access your NYU email so that you receive communications from your home academic unit. All new adjunct faculty are required to complete the Getting Ready to Teach at NYU SPS Nexus Workshop. If you have any questions or concerns, don’t hesitate to contact your academic unit directly. Click here for a directory of academic units and leaders.
The SPS Office of Faculty Affairs (OFA) focuses on faculty advancement across all units at SPS. Visit the OFA webpage for more information and details. Information on the adjunct professional development fund is here. Please familiarize yourself with all faculty policies as well as the process and criteria for adjunct faculty promotion on this page.
Learn who your leads your academic unit and communities by visiting the SPS Academic Leadership Directory. Your Academic Community of Practice (ACP) Coordinator, academic director, chair or assistant dean should be your first point of contact.
SPS is unique in its commitment to supporting adjunct faculty as they develop educational practices to advance student learning and engagement. Contact SPS’s Learning and Teaching Nexus (Nexus) to learn about upcoming teaching and technology trainings and workshops at nexus@nyu.edu and/or visit the Nexus website. Please note all faculty are expected to use “Brightspace,” the NYU Learning Management System for their course sites(s), and are expected to be proficient with NYU Zoom (Nexus has ample resources for both). Additional university-wide teaching resources can be found at the NYU Center for Faculty Advancement. See in particular their Support for Teaching and Learning site.
Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) are top priorities for SPS. See the SPS IDBEA website here. To assist with your syllabus and classroom preparation, as well as to further DEI engagement, SPS has an academic/teaching resource for faculty called the Intersectionality Lab (I-Lab). We encourage all faculty to peruse the site and engage the I-Lab team through its opportunities and services (including syllabus consults). NYU has a plethora of DEI events across the entire university. A good place to start is the Office of Global Inclusion.
As a member of the NYU SPS teaching community, you are essential to advancing student learning. Your combination of industry knowledge, applied educational practice, and passion for teaching define the SPS education experience. The Office of Faculty Affairs will host a School-wide orientation for new adjunct faculty. If you are new to SPS, you will receive an invitation to that event.
Your home academic unit will also host an orientation that is specific to your department’s goals. If you have questions about that event, contact your program representative directly.
Adjunct faculty at NYU are unionized under ACT-UAW Local 7902 and subject to the Collective Bargaining Agreement available online here. Once you are eligible to join the Union, NYU will send your name to the Union and they will contact you. If you have questions or concerns in the meantime, find the name of your Union contact here.
In accordance with the Appropriate Use of Email at New York University Policy, NYU email is provided "for purposes of furthering its educational mission and conducting institutional business" and "should be used responsibly, consistent with law and with the mission and policies of the University." All university related communications will be sent to your NYU email.
As written in the Collective Bargaining Agreement between NYU and Local 7902, adjunct faculty "will have access to the NYU Libraries and NYU email for one (1) year from their appointment end date." At the end of this period, you will lose email access.
Faculty should regularly maintain and update their professional headshots and biographical information via the Faculty Appointment System (FAS) to ensure their profiles are complete in the credit and noncredit Professional Pathways Faculty Directories on the SPS website. To update your profile:
Log into FAS and select "Biography Information".
Fill out information (Educational Record, Teaching Experience, Professional Experience, etc.).
Click the box found under “Publishable?” when entering or editing information to publish it to the website.
Send faculty headshot, narrative biography, and LinkedIn URL to sps.budget@nyu.edu for publication. Free professional headshots are offered through the NYU Photo Bureau and Wasserman's Headshot Photo Booth.
Information will be visible on the website after 24 hours, or once the instructor’s appointment has been processed in FAS. For any questions, please refer to the “Training Manual for FAS” for a more detailed step-by-step guide (see link on the FAS Welcome page after login) or contact the SPS Office of Budget and Accounting (sps.budget@nyu.edu; 212-998-7020).
