A Tour of

Sustainable NYU

Welcome to this walking tour of Sustainable NYU

Hello, my name is Dr. Genia Naro-Maciel and I am pleased to guide you around NYU's Washington Square Campus in New York City, with a focus on sustainability. But first, here is some important information to review before leaving for the tour.

The tour is about an hour long. With the Reflection, this module provides about 100 minutes of instructional time. It can be used individually or in combination with others in this collection, such as the “Decolonizing the High Line'' visit

Before you go, please download two free wildlife identification apps, SEEK by iNaturalist and Merlin by Cornell, and look them over.

Orient yourself and stay safe.  As you can see on the map below, and in the links to the ten stops, the tour starts at Garibaldi Plaza in Washington Square Park, a New York City public park that does not belong to NYU.  Scroll down to familiarize yourself with the site, then walk to  Stop 1 and find a comfortable place to sit around Garibaldi Plaza with a good view of Bobst.

Land Acknowledgement

Before starting the tour, it is important to acknowledge that every community owes its existence and vitality to generations from around the world who contributed their hopes and labor to making the history that led to this moment. Some were brought here against their will, some were drawn to leave distant homes in hope of a better life, and some are indigenous to this land. Truth and acknowledgment are critical to building mutual respect and connection across all barriers of heritage and difference. We begin this effort by honoring the truth and paying tribute through a formal land acknowledgment. As we begin this visit to New York University's Washington Square Campus in Manhattan, we are standing on the ancestral lands of the Lenape People. We pay respect to their elders, past and present. Please take a moment to consider the many legacies of displacement, migration, and settlement that bring us together here today at NYU and New York City.
