About this Project

The history of the New York African Free School in New York City points to the origins of segregated public education that still inform New York City schools today. This section of Hidden Histories: Black Stories of the Lower East Side explores aspects of the New York African Free School, which was located in various areas in the LES from 1787 to 1834.

Students in the NYU Steinhardt Art+Education course, Critical Pedagogy, Artists, and the Public Sphere conducted research and created the following posters as a public curriculum project to engage people in this largely invisible history.
