I am a Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) researcher and a UX research designer. My educational background includes a master's degree in HCI from the School of Information at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. I further pursued my academic journey and earned a PhD in Human-Centered Design and Engineering from the University of Washington, Seattle. I lead the Everyday Creativity Lab at National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University (NYCU).
My research focuses on investigating diverse and inclusive families and groups, focusing on new immigrant mothers and stay-at-home mothers, and designing Virtual Reality (VR) for children and the elderly. My work extends across various fields, including human-computer interaction, family interaction design, child-computer interaction, ubiquitous computing, and human-centered artificial intelligence. The central objective of my research is to understand how people create meaning in their daily lives and how we can design technology to support this process.
One specific area of exploration is underrepresented groups and minorities' technology use within their home environment, where it becomes an integral part of their everyday routines and interactions with those around them. By studying this ongoing engagement, I aim to uncover how designing for these processes can foster creativity and meaningful experiences. To achieve these goals, I employ a multidisciplinary approach that combines theoretical constructs from the social sciences with ethnographic-inspired methods such as observation and interviews. Additionally, I utilize technology design methods like research-through-design (RtD), human-centered design, and speculative design.
I adopt a mixed-methods methodology, integrating statistical analysis into surveys to augment the qualitative data. Additionally, I utilize design research techniques, engaging in co-design processes with participants to develop and refine technological concepts and prototypes. This participatory approach facilitates the assessment of these prototypes in collaboration with the participants. My focus is on creating technologies that enrich the daily experiences of individuals and their families. These methodological strategies yield critical insights into the interplay between social conditions and human values in shaping digital artifact design. They also elucidate the role of technology in enhancing these dynamically interactive relationships.
In addition to my academic pursuits, I have had the opportunity to gain practical experience in conducting real-world UX research with leading technology companies and research institutions such as VMware, Yahoo Research!, Microsoft Office, and Laurence Berkeley Lab.
I am teaching four courses at National Yang-Ming Chiao Tung University. I employ User-Centered Design, Research through Design, and reflexive and inclusive design approaches in the courses. You can learn more about the content of my courses in: 📙Teaching.
