What is an apprenticeship?
An apprenticeship is a position where a person learns a trade or profession while studying under a master in the field. Apprenticeships are often a mix of on-the-job training and sometimes some “book” work. The length of an apprenticeship may vary by trade or profession as well as geographic location. Many who successfully complete their apprenticeship, may receive the level of “journeyman” or receive a professional certification of competence.
Is this a good idea?
Apprenticeships can be a good way to earn money while learning your trade.
While construction trades are the most common apprenticeships, there are many others, including: elevator installers and repairers, solar panel installers, certain software engineers, tattoo artists, certain healthcare occupations, chef, photographer, among others.
How do I get started?
Most apprenticeship programs require applicants to be at least 17 years of age and have a high school diploma. Some programs may also require applicants to pass a test for entry into the program as well as when they obtain their certification.
Apprenticeships can often be found with a union or even at the College of Southern Nevada (CSN).
CSN will coordinate with several registered apprenticeship programs to make sure that apprentices receive the latest trade-related skills and also have the opportunity to complete general education classes that lead to both associate degrees and certificates of completion.
CSN programs are required to adhere to a set of standards as developed by the U.S. Department of Labor’s Bureau of Apprenticeship and Training, are fully accredited, and are approved by the Nevada State Apprenticeship Council. Program curriculum is approved by the Nevada Department of Education.
