What does the school counselor do?

The job of the school counselor is to support the social, emotional, and academic development (SEAD) of all students. Guidance and support are offered through regular classroom lessons, small-group activities, and individual counseling as needed. The school counselor can also help families connect with various community agencies to ensure students have all access to all of the resources necessary to be successful at school.

School Counseling Topics

In addition to working with parents, teachers, and school administrators to meet the needs of students, school counselors also follow the American School Counselor Association (ASCA) Student Standards. Some of the ASCA Student Standards are listed below:

Social Skills

Self-Management Skills

Learning Strategies

Whether your child, yourself, or someone else from your your family are in need of counseling services, there are many resources within our community that can help. If you have insurance, that is a good place to start. If you do not have insurance, there are still a number of organizations that provide counseling services at little or no charge. Parenting is the most rewarding and challenging job a person can take on. Having said that, most never receive formal education on how to navigate all of the challenges that come along with being a parent. Click here for a few resources that aim to help parents learn the best ways to raise respectful, responsible, and safe kids.

We all can use a little help some times. If your family is going through a difficult time or in need of a little extra support, check out this section for some community agencies that can help.

Meet Mr. Skinner

My name is Joey Skinner, and I am the school counselor at Eisenberg Elementary School. I am a Las Vegas native and grew up just a couple of miles from Eisenberg (I'm a Cimarron Memorial High School alumni; go Spartans!). I have worked for the Clark County School District for the last 23 years in various roles, including as a classroom teacher and a school counselor. I believe strongly that schools and families must partner together to best support the needs of our students. We are on the same team so don't ever hesitate to contact me with any questions or concerns you may have or if I can be of assistance (702-799-4680 ext. 4301; skinnjd@nv.ccsd.net).
