MATERIALS REQUIRED:

1. A student MUST wear the official Coronado High School physical education uniform. The uniform must be purchased through the school.

· Students may purchase the uniform during class time the first week of school, after that time uniforms must be purchased at the student store during lunch.

2. Socks and tennis shoes with laces are required and are considered part of the gym uniform.

3. Students will purchase a locker and will be required to pay a lock fee for the use of a school issued lock. Sharing lockers with other students is prohibited.

4. If a student forgets their uniform it may be possible to rent them from the PE office for $1.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION POLICIES AND PROCEDURES:

Ø Cell phones, iPods, or other electronic devices are not allowed in physical education whether you are dressed or not dressed, and WILL be confiscated and sent to the dean’s office. Coronado will not be responsible for lost or stolen items, so please do not bring them to P.E.

Ø Wearing gym clothes over street clothes will result in a NON-DRESS.

Ø Your gym clothes should be taken home at the end of the week to be washed.

Ø Absences due to participation in school activities or religious holidays will not be assessed any point (or credit) deductions, but all tests must be made up.

Ø No food or drink allowed in the P.E. at any time.

Ø Locker Room Conduct:

o The locker room doors will be locked when the late bell rings and no one will be permitted to enter afterwards.

o To prevent thefts, horseplay and vandalism, the locker rooms will be supervised. Students not following proper locker room conduct may lose locker room privileges.

o At the end of class, you must store your P.E. clothes in your assigned small locker. Do not share lockers with your friends, as problems may arise.

o If you lose your lock, see your teacher. You will have to pay for a replacement (this replacement lock MUST be purchased from the CHS PE teacher). Do NOT put personal locks on your locker – they will be removed and you will not be refunded.

o Teachers will not hold your valuables.

Ø Lock combinations, missing locks and/or new locks must be obtained before the tardy bell rings.

Ø Lost clothing will be held in the P.E. office for one school week, and then turned into the schools lost and found.

Ø Students missing class points due to an EXCUSED non-dress or EXCUSED absence will be given the opportunity to make up those missed points.

GRADING POLICY

Grades in Physical Education are comprised of 50% participation and 50% dressing out. A maximum of 70 points can be earned each week. Four days of each week are worth 10 points; and one day of each week students will participate in a fitness run worth 30 points. Students with EXCUSED ABSENCES will be given the opportunity to make up their missed points by handwriting a one-page summary of a sports, exercise, or nutrition article. Turn in the completed work to your teacher with: your name, hour and PE 1 or PE 2 with the date that you were absent. Make-up work must be completed by the following Friday after your absence occurred. Students subject to extended, excused non-dresses/absences will receive accommodations for recovery of missed points. Attendance, dressing, and participation are critical to a student’s success in Physical Education. The Physical Education staff will make every effort to see that each student has the opportunity to be successful. Students who do not dress for class will be subject to the following progressive discipline plan:

1st Non-Dress: Verbal Warning: loss of daily points

2nd Non-Dress: Parent Notification: loss of daily points

3rd Non-Dress: Dean’s Referral: loss of daily points

4th Non-Dress: Dean’s Referral: loss of daily points

5th Non-Dress: Failure for the quarter

Students failing the first quarter of a semester must achieve at least a “C” in the second quarter grading period in order to receive a passing grade for the semester.

Class Rules:

1. Follow directions and be prepared for class.

2. Respect all people and equipment in class.

3. No electronic devices (cell phones, iPods, games, etc.) in class.

4. Please do not bring food into class, gyms or locker rooms.

5. Please do not bring valuables to your physical education class.

Excused Notes (Parent and Medical):

A note from the parent is required each day a student is to be excused from participation in physical education because of illness or injury. If the student’s condition is serious enough to prevent him/her from participation for more than TWO consecutive school days, a note from the student’s physician will be required on the 3rd day of non-participation. Failure to obtain a note from a physician on the 3rd day will result in the student losing their class points for each day that they do not participate. A student whose injury of illness prevents their active participation in physical education may be asked to assist the instructor during the class period or they may be given a written assignment as an opportunity to earn their daily points. A student who has been advised by a physician not to participate in physical education for an extended period of time will be scheduled out of their physical education class as soon as possible. STUDENTS ARE STILL EXPECTED TO DRESS OUT WITH AN EXCUSED NOTE, UNLESS PHYSICALLY IMPOSSIBLE.

Assessments:

Students will be given an assessment following each unit. They may also be required to complete online quizzes to review the vocabulary, rules, and strategies presented during the unit. Each quiz is required to be completed one week from the assigned date of the quiz. Semester final exams will also be completed online. It is important that your child knows how to gain access to their teacher’s website, which can be found by clicking the link below:
