National Honor Society: Selection Procedures
Chaparral High School Chapter
The National Honor Society (NHS) chapter of Chaparral High School is a duly chartered and affiliated chapter of this prestigious national organization. Membership is open to those students who meet the required standards in four areas of evaluation: Scholarship, Service, Leadership, and Character.
Eligibility
Students in grades 10 and 11 are eligible for membership.
Scholarship: The student must have a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or better on a 4.0 scale.
Status: Candidates must have been in attendance at the school the equivalent of one semester.
The Selection Process
The selection of members to this chapter is a majority vote of the Faculty Council, which consists of five faculty members appointed by the school principal. The chapter adviser serves as a non-voting facilitator of the process.
1. Candidate Form
Students who meet the scholarship criterion are invited to complete a Candidate Form. This form provides the Faculty Council with information regarding the candidate’s history of leadership experiences and participation in school or community service.
Note: Completion of this form does not guarantee selection; it is the basis for the Faculty Council to review the candidate's qualifications.
2. Faculty Input
To evaluate a candidate’s character, the Faculty Council solicits professional input from the school faculty.
All faculty members are invited to provide reflections on a candidate’s service activities, character, citizenship, and leadership.
Official school disciplinary records are also reviewed.
3. Review and Voting
The Faculty Council carefully reviews the Candidate Forms, faculty input, and other relevant data to determine if the candidate meets the criteria for membership. A majority vote of the Council is necessary for selection.
4. Notification and Induction
Following a review of the results by the principal, candidates are notified regarding selection or non-selection according to a predetermined schedule.
A formal induction ceremony is held to recognize all newly selected members.
Membership Obligations
Once inducted, new members are required to maintain the same level of performance (or better) in all four criteria that led to their selection. Obligations include:
Regular attendance at chapter meetings held monthly during the school year.
Participation in the chapter service project(s).
Annual dues will be $20. This is payable within 30 days of induction or the start of the new school year.
