North Union Community School District is asking voters to consider a bond referendum on November 3, 2026, to support improvements at North Union High School, including a new gymnasium, new locker rooms, flexible multipurpose space, and related site improvements.
The project is designed to address current space and scheduling limitations while helping ensure District facilities remain flexible, functional and ready to serve students, activities, and the community for years to come.
In a community like North Union, the school is more than a building. It’s where students learn and compete, families gather, and many of the moments that bring the community together take place.
Adding flexible space at the high school would help North Union meet today’s needs while making sure the District is prepared to serve students, activities and the community well into the future.

North Union is planning ahead to make sure its facilities can continue serving students, activities and the community for years to come. The project would address current space and scheduling limitations while creating more flexibility for athletics, school programs, events and community use.
The project would include an expanded gymnasium, new locker rooms, flexible multipurpose space and related site improvements at North Union High School in Armstrong.
The existing space makes it difficult to accommodate multiple practices, activities and events at the same time. North Union is also limited in its ability to host certain tournaments and larger events. A larger gymnasium would provide more scheduling flexibility and create additional opportunities for students, teams and the community.
The multipurpose space is intended to provide flexible room for a variety of school and community uses. Depending on scheduling and programming, it would support student activities, practices, youth programs, meetings, events and other gatherings throughout the year.
North Union schools already bring students, families and community members together for activities, events and celebrations throughout the year. The project would create more opportunities to host tournaments, youth camps, graduation, concerts, vendor fairs, alumni events and other larger gatherings.
Hosting additional large-scale events could also bring more visitors to Armstrong, creating additional activity for local restaurants, businesses and services while giving the community more opportunities to gather close to home.
Based on current estimates, the impact would be approximately $3.25 per month, or $39 per year, for a home assessed at $100,000. Visit the Tax Calculators page to estimate the potential impact on your property.
Iowa lawmakers have extended SAVE through 2071, but beginning in FY27, an increasing portion of SAVE revenue will be redirected to statewide property tax relief. Over time, up to 25% of SAVE revenue will be diverted away from school districts.
For North Union, that makes thoughtful long-term planning even more important. The District must consider how to address current facility needs while preserving flexibility and available resources for future maintenance, infrastructure and capital projects.
It’s about making room for what matters today while helping keep North Union ready for what comes next — for students, activities, school events, and the community.
