The project was inspired by artist and scientist Jill Pelto. In 2018, Pelto earned a M.S. from the University of Maine, and her research focused on the sensitivity of the Antarctic Ice Sheet to climate change. She has B.A. degrees in Studio Art and Earth Science.

Pelto creates illustrated graphs that incorporate real data and her powerful work has been featured on Science Friday and other national publications. Read more about her and see a gallery of her artwork by visiting her website here.

Gulf of Maine Temperature Variability, Jill Pelto

"My passion is constructing new ways to communicate science through art. Scientific research and data fuel the content of my artwork. I create pieces that raise awareness about interesting and important environmental topics. The key topic in my portfolio is climate change data: melting glaciers, rising sea level, and threatened species."
