ENT 46 : Thyroid – Simple nodular goitre

CASE HISTORY

The condition was found on routine examination of a patient who died of coronary thrombosis. There was nothing in the history of physical examination to suggest toxicity.

PATHOLOGY

The whole gland has been mounted except for a slice which has been removed from the posterior aspect of both lobes to reveal the structure. The gland consists of numerous nodules of translucent thyroid tissue bounded by a delicate connective tissue stroma. There are some darker areas of haemorrhage, and a pale area of fibrosis at the upper pole of the left lobe. There are none of the fleshy areas commonly seen in toxic goitre.
