The use of layers in photography is sometimes important in considering composition and can also be a part of the way in which a photograph is produced. Giacomo Costa creates composite digital photographs in which contrasting landscape images are combined in layers. Michael Muraz considered layers of visual interest as an important compositional tool when photographing architecture in his project Urban Walls. In the series Layer Drawings Nobuhiro Nakanishi present photographs of the landscape in physical layers. Claude Cahun created surreal portraits using physical layers through photomontage.
