ENJOY MY FIRST EVER EMOJI STORY!
CLUE: I will tell you that this is a popular netflix show and they have 5 seasons out now.
While this project gave me much pleasure, it was time-consuming because I rarely ever use emojis and I had to think carefully of what message I wanted my audience to get. This is a step I would still engage in if I was writing, using words, since the message being conveyed is very important. Despite, all my efforts to make my story clear, that includes sending it to friends and family from different age groups, I had to do some tweaking or editing to provide clearer meaning. I kept changing the descriptions to see how precise the emojis could get to the message. I did not use the emoji keyboard much because it had limited options, so I turned to Google which offered multiple options, from various sources where emojis are used frequently. My story is not a long one since it focuses on the overall theme or main idea of the show rather than a single episode.
Did you rely more on syllables, words, ideas, or a combination of all of them?
I relied mainly on words and ideas to do the synopsis. I would have had to do way more work if I was focusing on just syllables and/or words. I struggled with finding universal meanings of some of the symbols, as the meaning could be lost or the story misinterpreted by different individuals based on one's culture and background knowledge. Once one finds pictures or symbols that are universally understood, it can communicate a message more effectively than words, as words can convey multiple meanings based on context, punctuations, roots, among other conventions.
Did you start with the title? Why? Why not?
I started with the title because my audience would have a better chance figuring out the rest of the story once they have an idea of what it was about. We have also been taught to give titles to our stories so that it is understood in a particular context, as it gives our readers an understanding or background which could be related to their prior knowledge and experiences.
Did you choose the work based on how easy it would be to visualize?
I chose this story because it was really the last show I watched and I figured that I am very likely to find symbols to represent the ideas that I wanted to focus on. This new mode of communication is facilitated with this type of story. According to Kress, "aptness of mode to the characteristics of that represented is much more a feature now" (Kress, 2005). Certainly some stories would present greater difficulties using this mode. In addition, my audience are more likely to be familiar with the show, since it is on Netflix, so this mode of representation makes more sense.
