CHARACTERISTICS OF A 4TH GRADER
Developing sense of humor, love comics and cartoons
Can develop an inferiority about their lack of ability to draw what they see
Compare their work to that of peers
Are open to viewing different art styles and do not yet judge if something is "good" or "bad."
Enjoy learning about different cultures and tine periods
Learning about famous artists styles and reproducing their styles in their own art
TEACHING 4TH GRADERS
Avoid having them copy
Talk about symbols in artwork
Introduce still life to foster the decision making process, highlighting unity, variety, and emphasis.
Talk about positive and negative space, radial balance, center of interest, focl point, and cvontrast
Introduce portions of the face, have them do self portraits, draw fellow students, and discuss body proportions
Teach them to really look, and avoid trite symbols
Encourage exploration of color schemes
Compare two artworks from two different cultures (time or place) on the basis of theme, media, and subject
