Mrs. Kassa

GRADE 8

Welcome!

My name is Mrs. Kassa and I am delighted to welcome you to the exciting world of Algebra 1 and Math 8! Our classroom is a vibrant community where students support one another. They learn to provide constructive feedback, explain concepts to their peers, and celebrate each other's successes.

Algebra isn't just about solving equations; it's a powerful tool that unlocks the secrets of patterns, relationships, and real-world applications. The Algebra 1 course offered to advanced math students in grade 8 lays the foundation for future mathematical success, setting the stage for higher-level thinking and problem-solving.

Math 8 builds on topics covered in grade 7, providing students with a comprehensive understanding of essential middle school math concepts. It also covers new geometry and algebra topics, ensuring a smooth transition into Algebra 1 their freshman year.  Throughout the year, students will engage in activities that help build their confidence in math, promote critical thinking, problem-solving, and the application of mathematical principles to real-world situations.

In both math classes, we strive to go beyond traditional rote memorization. We aim to cultivate a thinking classroom where students are encouraged to ask questions, explore multiple approaches, and engage in collaborative problem-solving. The focus is not just on getting the right answer, but on understanding the underlying concepts and applying them to real-world situations. Students learn to embrace the concept of productive struggle and appreciate its importance in math and beyond. I am committed to creating a supportive and engaging learning environment for each student.

Class Overview

Why is a Math Thinking Classroom Important?

A thinking classroom fosters a love for learning and helps students develop essential skills for success in mathematics and beyond. By embracing challenges and learning from mistakes, students gain confidence in their problem-solving abilities. The goal is to create a dynamic environment that prepares students not only for upcoming math courses but also equips them with critical thinking skills applicable in various aspects of life.

How Can Parents Support?

We encourage you to engage in conversations with your child about their learning experiences. Ask them about the problems they're solving, the strategies they're using, and the connections they're making. Reinforce the idea that mistakes are an integral part of the learning process and encourage a positive attitude towards challenges.
