Science: Think About It Thursday!

1). On Monday, we had our last Make-It Monday for our states of matter unit. Please watch the video below to review the three states of matter and different phase changes. The video introduces some complex science terms. While watching the video, it is more important for students to review about how matter can change phases rather than learning these terms. Solids can transform into liquids when heated, and liquids can change back into solids when cooled. However, a liquid will turn into a gas when it is heated. Finally, gases can change back into a liquid when cooled. It is important to review how states of matter can change forms, and this information will help students with the first part of the worksheet today.

2). Please complete the editable worksheet. Be sure to read the directions of the left-hand side of the worksheet for a few hints. You will need to click the "Make a Copy" button to access the worksheet. Feel free to share your work with Mrs. Hillman at hillmana@norwalktruckers.net when you are finished!

Please have students use the attached worksheet to replicate the atoms (or particles) in each state of matter. Students can use any type of cereal that you may have at home. I used cheerios on my worksheet to create a model for students. I also used liquid glue to get the pieces to stay of the sheet of paper. Students could simply place the pieces of cereal on the sheet in the correct formations if you do not wish to glue them down. Student could also draw three shapes on a sheet of paper to complete the activity if you are unable to print. This could be a fun activity to try over your Spring Break as well.

2). Now let's practice reading some words with the r-controlled vowel -IR. Blend the top words slowly 3 times each to practice reading words with -IR, then have someone at home time you and see how quickly you can read the -IR words at the bottom.

3). Let's practice reading some words with those r-controlled vowels in them. We will be completing a Workbook

page from our SuperKids book. It will review synonyms using words with r-controlled vowels. Watch the video to review synonyms (words that mean the same). If you have access to a printer and would like to you can print out the workbook page below, or you can follow along with the video and help me answer the question.

4) Now let's listen to Chapter 1 from the story "Fire!" in our SuperKids books.

6). Chant, cheer, or move your spelling words at home.

Math:

1). This week is going to be a review week so we are going to take a break from those workbook pages. Let's work on some addition facts today! Please watch this short video to review adding numbers up to 20.

2). Click the button below to see an addition worksheet. This is our first editable worksheet. That means you can double click and type your answers in the blue boxes so you don't have to print out the worksheet. Click on the dark blue button below and then on the next page click the blue button that says, "Make a copy." Once your student is finished you can send the worksheet to Mrs. Hillman by clicking the yellow share button and typing in her email address. (hillmana@norwalktruckers.net)

3). There are a few online activities that students can do to practice their addition skills. The first two links are websites that work on addition fact fluency. The first website asks students to find the sums of problems and the second link is a website that asks students to find the missing addend in addition problems. The third link is a fun game students are welcome to play.

4). You can log onto happynumbers.com also by using the link and passwords from the Math Tab at the top of this page. I see that some of you still need to take your placement test. Your goal is to be on Happy Numbers about 45 minutes per week (around 10 minutes a day). You can always do more if you are enjoying it.

Today would be your Library Day. Please use the "Specials" Tab at the top of the page to connect with our school librarian and to see what she has planned for you today. ***Pay close attention- you may hear some r-controlled vowels. It's a funny one- ENJOY!

Day 13 (April 6th)

Morning Message:

^^^Please click the blue button above to view today's morning message from home. ^^^ If you should need a class code, ours is: hillman304.

It makes me so happy that more of you are posting videos each day to respond to our morning message. I hope you are taking the time to watch the answers of your friends and practice being active listeners. If you are having trouble using FlipGrid, please let me know. Keep your videos coming!!!

Reading:

1). Let's do a quick review of the Memory Words (some of them are your spelling words this week).

2). Last week our phonics skill was -OR and -AR. Those are called "r-controlled vowels" because adding letter r changes the sound of the vowel. This week we will learn some more "r-controlled vowels," -ER, -IR, and -UR. The crazy thing is... they all make the SAME sound! Watch the video below to practice the sound that they make.

3). Let's practice reading some words with those r-controlled vowels in them. Click the link below and read columns 1-4. The first 2 columns should be review from last week. The last 2 columns are words with our new r-controlled vowels.

4). Listen to Workbook Page 79 as the Superkids Read to you. Follow the link below to see where to find "Assignments" from the Superkids Portal. The PIN to log in to SuperKids is 123456 and you child's icon is the school bus. Let me know if you have any trouble.

5). Listen to the Short Short (Backpage Page) "Sal and the Fire Department" from the Read-Aloud Video below. (It would be the last green sheet from the packet sent home on March 13th. It is also available to print below.) Find and highlight or underline all of the r-controlled vowels (-IR, -ER, -UR, -AR, -OR). Then see if you can answer the comprehension questions from the sheet below.

6) Practice your spelling words and trace any r-controlled vowels with a crayon or marker and trace any Memory Words with a different color. This was the last spelling list from the packet sent home on March 13th. You can also view it below.

Math:

1). We are going to start a new online math program called Happy Numbers. It is compatible with PCs, tablets, and phones. The first thing that students will need to do to begin this program is to take the "Pre-test" on the program (it should take about 10-15 minutes). After this is completed, a program is developed based around the areas that your child needs instruction in math. The online format responds to student input in much of the same way that a teacher would. It will teach skills and move at the pace that your child needs. It provides data to the teachers as well, so that we can provide any necessary interventions for your child as well. The program can even extend learning by teaching above grade level.

****Today I would like your student to log on and complete the beginning assessment. If they would like to start their "learning path" after that, they can. We are recommending about 45-60 minutes on the program a week (so about 10 minutes a day).

Our class Code is: 408 815

<<Log in passwords can be found in the link below.

Science: Happy Make It Monday! (No Specials Today)

1). We were planning to start a unit on Matter next in class. The three states of matter are solids, liquids, and gases. Watch the BrainPOP video below to begin learning about the three states of matter. Feel free to take the easy and hard quizzes after watching the video.

2). Make It Mondays are going to be days that Miss Vogel does an experiment related to our science unit. These are going to be simple experiments that do not require many supplies. Today Miss Vogel is going to be using balloons to show the three states of matter. She will blow up the first balloon with air to model a gas. The second balloon will be filled with water to model a liquid. The third balloon will be filled with water and then placed in the freezer until frozen to model a solid. She will then explore each balloon in the video. Feel free to try this quick experiment at home!

3). Click on the buttons below to play games that address solids, liquids, and gases. The first game is a fun matching game. The second game is sorting activity that requires students to move objects into columns based on whether they are a solid, liquid, or gas. Students have the option to listen to each object if they are not sure what the picture represents. There are multiple levels as well.

Week 3 (March 30 - April 3)

(Previous weeks and lessons will be below this week's.)

Welcome to Week 3 of Schooling at Home. I cannot believe that we have spent 3 weeks apart. I am definitely missing all of you so much! Parents, I know that this has been a huge adjustment for all of you. It has been very tough on the teachers as well, and we are working hard to learn new ways to teach from afar. With that being said, I would love to hear your thoughts, ideas, and feedback on the following:

1) How are things going? What is working well for your child? Do you have any questions for us? Is there anything we could provide/do to help you with teaching your child at home? We want to help you and your child to the best of our ability during this time.

2) Would you be interested in having a weekly ZOOM meeting where your child could see and hear their classmates and teachers through the computer, tablet, or phone? If you would be interested, is there a time of day that would work best for your family?

*** You can send me your thoughts and questions by:

emailing at: hillmana@norwalktruckers.net

sending me a message through Bloomz

call or text Mrs. Hillman at: (419)-706-3553

We truly appreciate your feedback! Thank you for taking the time to help your child with school work each day. -Mrs. Hillman

2). Now let's practice deciding if we should use -AR or -OR in words to complete the sentences. If you have access to a printer, you can print the page below OR you can number a piece of scrap paper from 1-5 and record your answers on that. Then we will take a pretend spelling test over your words for this week.

3). I added many new activities, stories, and games to the SuperKids site today. Please use this time as FUN FRIDAY and get onto the Superkids Link to play some games. The PIN to get in is 123456, find your name and our class icon is the school bus. If you have any trouble getting onto the SuperKids site, please let me know. I am going to start posting some assignments and assessments through the link soon. Parents- please watch the video below for some important information.

Math:

1). Watch the video below. This video demonstrates how to group objects by ten to make them easier to count.

2). Complete Additional Practice 7-7 "Problem Solving: Repeated Reasoning" (from the packet that was sent home on March 13th).

3). The following link is an interactive game that requires students to group cows by either 5s or 10s and to move them across the river. The student will need to select how they wish to group the cows (by 5s or 10s) and then they will practice making groups. For example, when grouping by 10s the students will click on ten cows and then click the "Group" button on the left hand side of the page. The student will continue to group the cows until they can no longer create groups of 10. Then, they will move the remaining cows to the other side. Students can then count with the game or alone to determine the number of total cows. This activity goes right along with the workbook page.

Reading:

1). Let's do a quick review of our Memory Words and phonics skill -OR for this week. If you have access to a printer you can print out the memory word cards to play a game. Some ideas are: Memory or Concentration, Hide the Words and Go on a "Word Hunt," or put the word cards onto a wall and throw a soft ball at each word as you read it (or aim with a nerf gun at each word as you read it). Don't forget that reading should be FUN!

2). Review the sounds that -AR makes by watching the videos below. Then practice reading the -AR words in the blending page below.

3). If you have access to a printer, you can print the workbook page below OR you can choose to read if from your computer and write your answers on a scrap piece of paper numbered 1-5. Try to complete the workbook page below by reading each word and choosing which would make sense in each sentence. WHEN YOU ARE FINISHED completing the workbook page on your own, watch the video and check your answers with mine.

4). We are going to do "reading groups" today, so you will have to choose the reading group that you belong to and follow along with that story.

***If you are in Mrs. Hillman's reading groups (Cheetahs or Giraffes) follow along with the story "It's A Robot" below.

***If you are in Mrs. Frado's reading groups (Lions or Monkeys) follow along with the story "Extreme Sports" below.

5). Practice your spelling words and have someone at home give you a practice spelling test. Practice any words that you miss, so that you will spell them all correctly tomorrow.

Math:

1). Please watch the video below on how to count objects in groups of 1s or 10s.

2). Complete Additional Practice 7-6 "Count and Write Numerals" (from the packet that was sent home on March 13th).

3). The following link is an interactive game that requires students to count the objects and type the numeral in the box. There are four levels that get progressively more difficult. It is helpful for students to practice counting objects in groups of ten on levels 3 and 4.

4). As always, feel free to use the Reading, Math, and Additional Supports Tabs at the top of this page to play any reading or math games. The XtraMath program would be a great way for students to keep their addition and subtraction skills sharp while we are working on other math skills.

5). Today would be your Computer Day. Please use the "Specials" Tab at the top of the page to connect with Mrs. O'Neil and see what she has planned for you today.

Day 10 (Wednesday, April 1st)

Morning Message:

^^^Please click the blue button above to view today's morning message from home. ^^^ If you should need a class code, ours is: hillman304.

It makes me so happy that more of you are posting videos each day to respond to our morning message. I hope you are taking the time to watch the answers of your friends and practice being active listeners. If you are having trouble using FlipGrid, please let me know. Keep your videos coming!!!

Reading:

1). Let's do a quick review of our Memory Words and phonics skill -OR for this week.

2). Watch the 2 videos below to review the sounds that -AR and -OR make. Then read rows 1 and 2 from the new decoding page below to someone at home.

3). If you have access to a printer, you can print the word cards below to play a MONSTER GAME with the -OR and -AR word cards. ** If you do not have a way to print the cards at home, you can open the game below and take turns reading the words with someone at home.

To Play: Cut apart, shuffle, and place cards face down. Have players take turns flipping the top card and reading the word aloud. A player keeps each coin card read correctly. If a player reads a card incorrectly, the card is placed in a discard pile. If a player draws a MONSTER! card, the monster “steals” the player’s coin cards and they are placed in the discard pile. After the last card is played, the player with the most coin cards wins

4). Today we are going to listen to the rest of the story "Slumber Party" from our SuperKids Book. (***If you did not listen to the first part from yesterday, please listen to step 4 from yesterday first.)

6). Practice your spelling words and cheer or move as you spell each one.

Math:

1). Please watch the video on open number lines. This video provides five examples that go along with the workbook pages.

2). Complete Additional Practice 7-5 "Count on an Open Number line" (from the packet that was sent home on March 13th).

3). The following link is site that includes a game that requires students to sequence numbers and to find the missing number in sequences. Students can choose to work with sequences up to 50, up to 100, and up to 120. I recommend that students practice the higher levels because they will need to be able to count and work with numbers up to 120.

4). Today would be your Art Day. Please use the "Specials" Tab at the top of the page to connect with Mrs. Protzman and to see what she has planned for you today.

Day 9 (Tuesday, March 31st)

Morning Message:

^^^Please click the blue button above to view today's morning message from home. ^^^ If you should need a class code, ours is: hillman304.

It makes me so happy that more of you are posting videos each day to respond to our morning message. I hope you are taking the time to watch the answers of your friends and practice being active listeners. If you are having trouble using FlipGrid, please let me know. Keep your videos coming!!!

Reading:

1). Let's do a quick review of our Memory Words for this week.

2). Watch the 2 videos below to review the sounds that -AR and -OR make. Then read columns 1 and 2 from the decoding page below to someone at home.

3). Look at the worksheet below. You can print it our if you'd like OR you can read the words in each box and point to the word that names each picture. Have someone at home check your answers.

4). Today we are going to listen to the first half of the story "Slumber Party" from our SuperKids Book. While you are following along with the story, I want you to pay close attention to the characters and how they are feeling. This will help you to complete a Character Analysis when finished.

5). Now that you have listened to the story "Slumber Party" you should know that the 3 characters are Tic, Lily, and Cass. Choose one of those girls for this character analysis sheet. Write the name of the character that you choose at the top and 3 words to describe her below. You can choose to print this out and write or just to discuss your answers with someone at home.

6). Practice your spelling words and cheer or move as you spell each one.

Math:

1). Watch the two videos below. The first video is another Jack Hartmann video demonstrating how to count by 1s to 120. The second video is an animated math model video. The video will ask students to complete patterns and type in answers. However, students cannot do these tasks because it is a Youtube video. I would suggest pausing the video and having the students verbally provide their answers during the video. This video goes really well with the workbook pages.

2). Complete Additional Practice 7-4 "Count by 1s or 10s to 120" (from the packet that was sent home on March 13th).

3). The following links are interactive games that require students to count forward from 100 to 120 or to skip count. Education.com is allowing parents and teachers to sign up for free during school closures. I created a free account to access these games. (The BASIC membership is free.) If you are not comfortable using Education.com that is totally fine! I also provided a third link to a game that works on counting forward and backward by 10s. When beginning the game, select "Level 3: Count on and Back in 10s." Students can then select different levels of difficulty. I found level 3 to be the most appropriate level to go with this lesson but students can also practice counting by 2s and 5s in levels 1 and 2.

4). As always, feel free to use the Reading, Math, and Additional Supports Tabs at the top of this page to play any reading or math games. The XtraMath program would be a great way for students to keep their addition and subtraction skills sharp while we are working on other math skills.

5). Today would be your Library Day. Please use the "Specials" Tab at the top of the page to connect with our school librarian and to see what she has planned for you today. Pay close attention to the story- you may hear some -AR sounds!

Day 8 (Monday, March 30th)

Reading:

2). We are beginning a new unit in reading today, so we have new Memory Words to learn. Click the button below to see the new memory words and learn the sign language for each one. If you have access to a printer, then you can choose to print out the memory word cards below to practice or play the game of Memory (concentration) with a family member at home.

3). Your new phonics skill for this week is -AR and -OR. AR is the sound that I pirate makes...it sounds like the letter R. OR sounds like when you are choosing between 2 things...this OR that. Please watch the videos below to practice the sounds that AR and OR make.

4). Listen to the Short Story "Party Planning" from our SuperKids book. Listen for any new memory words or words with our new phonics patterns -AR and -OR.

-After listening to the story, find your "Party Planning" Backpage page (it is green in the stapled packet that was sent home on March 13th). It is also located below. Highlight or underline any words that you find with the -AR or -OR phonics pattern hiding inside.

5). In the story "Party Planning" the SuperKids decided to just stay at home and pitch a tent in the yard. We have all been doing a lot of staying at home lately, so I made a text-to-self connection. Watch the video below and then click to see the picture of my connection.

6). Practice your spelling words and trace over the -AR and -OR with a different color. (Maybe you can practice them in the blanket tent/fort that you create at home. (If you don't have time, maybe you can do it another day. Don't forget to send me a picture of your tent/fort!)

7). Optional Practice: If you would like to visit the Reading Tab at the Top of this page to link to some online reading games and activities. I have opened up many more stories and games for you to play on the Superkids Site. ENJOY!

Math:

1). ). Watch the Hundreds Chart song. This chart focuses on a hundreds chart, but students will need to know numbers up to 120.

2). Complete Additional Practice 7-3 "Count on a Number Chart to 120" (from the packet that was sent home on March 13th).

3). The following link is an interactive game that requires students to work with a hundred chart. Students can practice finding numbers between 1 and 100 or by counting forward and backward between 1 and 100. Counting "Across the 10s" is more difficult than counting "Within the 10s" if students choose to count forward and backward. Counting "Across the 10s" requires students to practice tracking correctly from one line to another on a 100 chart. I also provided an interactive chart up to 120 for students to work with.

We have NO SPECIALS on Monday. Please read a book or practice your spelling words in your blanket tent/fort OR use the link below to go on an indoor scavenger hunt at your house.

Week 2 (March 23-27)

Norwalk City School will be having Spirit Week from home this week to keep things engaging and exciting. Please refer to the list to the left if you and your child would like to participate.

4). Now that you have listened to and seen all of the parks from the story, choose which one you would like to visit most. Is it the:

Rocky Mountains (with mountains)

Yellowstone Park (with big animals and springs that shoot water from the ground)

Mammoth Cave (with tunnels underground)

Grand Canyon (with rocky cliffs that you can ride a mule down)

Cape Cod (with beaches and whale watching)

Everglades (with giant wetlands full of frogs, crocodiles, and other animals)

****Write a sentence telling where you would like to go and illustrate it. Click to see my example below. I bet most of you can guess which one I would choose!
