Hello, and welcome to Tea Time! Tea Time is my very own, lifestyle-focused article where I write about all things worth mentioning. I am new to North Star Academy this year, and am proud to have begun my article last month.
I look forward to interacting and writing for the Navigator. Thank you for reading!
“A kind gesture can reach a wound that only compassion can heal.” - Steve Maraboli
Amongst all U.S. news outlets recently, the only topic of discussion has been the two major hurricanes that hit the southern U.S. Hurricanes Harvey and Irma have ravaged coastlines and homes, devastating the entire United States. In the wake of all these tragic tropical storms, I have decided to write this month regarding the hurricanes, and how you can get involved to reach those affected.
Earlier this September, Hurricane Harvey hit Texas, dumping nearly 20 trillion gallons of water throughout Texas and Louisiana, and is now estimated to cost Texas $125 billion to clean up. 39 people perished due to the severe storm, and 185,149 homes have been destroyed. Following Harvey was Irma, a hurricane that hit Florida. The storm knocked out 5.8 million people’s power, and has killed 27 people. The numbers corresponding to the storms alone break your heart, but when you hear personal encounters and first-hand stories, the reality of devastation hits close to home.
After watching the news a few days back, I saw a commercial for the Red Cross and instantly felt God tugging on my heart to donate. I donated what I could towards the relief efforts and I now urge my fellow students to do the same as well. Down below is a list of organizations, and their links, that you can donate to, and/or places you can go to volunteer, if you live close enough. Keep in mind if you do live close enough to go out to volunteer, please do not just show up. Many first-responders ask that you go through an organization and sign-up for specific trips on specific days. If you are not able to donate anything, keep those affected in your prayers.
