NPA Chess Team

Purpose

NPA Chess Team is open to students in 6th-12 Grades. All levels of experience, beginner to advance, are welcome to the team. The team competes at scholastic events. The middle school students participate at the US Chess Federation sanctioned tournaments. The high school students compete at Arizona Interscholastic Association (AIA) and US Chess Federation sanctioned tournaments.

Benefits of Chess

Chess provides an opportunity for students to develop skills in risk and return evaluation, critical thinking, and problem solving. Students develop social and interaction skills.

What We've Done

In 2018, NPA revived the Chess Team. Our team has experienced many successes. At the AIA level, the High School division won 3rd place in the 2019 State Individual Invitational. Also, a team member earned 2019 Region I AIA All Team spot. Both the Middle School and High School divisions earned accolades at USCF tournaments. The High School team members qualified to compete in the AZ State USCF Championships, two years in a row. In 2019, a Middle School Team member won top 25 in the K-7/8 Division of the AZ State USCF Championship. In February 2020, the Middle School team members swept 1st, 2nd, and 3rd at the K.I.D.S Chess Tournament.
