5a. Close Read

Today we're going to read On the Town: A Community Adventure.

Questions

  1. Why does Charlie have a community adventure? What does Charlie do when he gets to each place?

  2. What does Charlie learn about community during his adventure?

  3. What is the main topic of Places in My Neighborhood? What do you think is the author's reason for writing this text?

  4. On the Town: A Community Adventure is a story. Places in My Neighborhood is an informational text. How are these two texts alike? How are these texts different?

5b. Reading Analysis

Compare and Contrast

Stories tell about the adventures and experiences that the characters have, and informational texts tell information about a topic. Sometimes when you read a story and an informational text, you can compare and contrast the key ideas and details in the texts.

On pages 10 and 11 of On the Town: A Community Adventure, Charlie goes to the police station. On pages 42 and 43 of Places in My Neighborhood, we read about police stations.

How are these pages about police stations alike?

They are alike because Charlie talks to a police officer and so does Devon. The police officers are both wearing uniforms in the pictures.

How are they different?

They are different because the police officer is a man in On the Town: A Community Adventure, and he tells Charlie that he is a special part of the community. In Places in My Neighborhood, the police officer is a woman. She tells Devon not to talk to strangers.
