Autism/Life Skills Support

The Autism/Life Skills Support Program serves students who are identified as Autistic Support or Life Skills Support under Type of Support listed in their IEP. The AS/LSS program is designed for students identified as having autism or an intellectual disability which requires a highly structured setting in order to make meaningful progress in the general education curriculum and requires intensive instruction to prepare the student to work and live in the community. The program emphasizes functional academics, socialization/communication, behavioral skills, self-advocacy, vocational education, and daily living skills.

Level of Support

Students may receive full-time, supplemental, or itinerant support services. All programs are individualized based on student need. Students will be provided with the necessary supports to access the curriculum successfully. Opportunities for inclusion in general education environments are provided as determined by the IEP team.

Goals and Specially Designed Instruction

Goals and specially designed instruction are most often related to behavior supports, social skills training, emotional regulation and a Transition Plan which enhances functional academics, communication, self-help, social skills, self-advocacy, vocational education, and daily living skills.

Community Based Instruction

Students may participate in community based instruction within the surrounding community. Community based instruction provides students with educational instruction through real life experiences in naturally occuring community environments. These experiences include travel instruction, vocational skills, functional skills, recreation/leisure activities, community awareness, and independent living activities.

Academics

Students may receive academic support for English, Reading, and Math in the AS/LSS classroom. Adaptations and/or alternative curriculums are developed for content area and special area subjects within the general education environment.

English Language Arts

The English Language Arts course is designed for students who require direct instruction in the area of functional written language and reading as determined by the IEP.

Math

The math course is designed for students who require direct instruction in the area of functional mathematical computation and problem-solving as determined by the IEP.

Daily Living Skills

Daily Living Skills are designed to provide instruction in the area of independent living to prepare for practical experiences in the world outside of the high school environment. Topics related to self-help, housekeeping, and food preparation skills.

Vocational Resource

Vocational Education is designed to provide instruction in the area of vocational skills necessary for future employment.

Related Services

Students may receive related services, including but not limited to Speech and Language Therapy, Occupational Therapy, Physical Therapy, Vision Support, Hearing Support, Nursing services, and behavioral supports. These services are implemented in a variety of settings such as general education classes, Learning Support classrooms, and vocational or community-based settings. Student goals and objectives are integrated into all curricular areas throughout the school day
