Internships are provided for SENIORS to explore a career area and make preparations to enter that field. During an internship students work an average of 6 hours a week side-by-side with a workplace professional, in the student’s area of career interest. The coordinator will be in close communication with the student and workplace throughout the internship and will conduct one workplace visit during the semester. Students keep a journal and give an exit presentation at the conclusion of the experience to earn academic credit.
If you are interested in doing an internship your senior year, it is recommended that you submit your application, discuss it with your counselor, and the School to Work Coordinator during the semester PRIOR to the internship. There are some businesses that are open to internships, but many who have not and it takes time to clarify the experience and their responsibilities. It is helpful, but not required if you have made contact with your desired Internship placement and after meeting you, they are interested/willing in hosting you. Securing an Internship is very similar process to getting hired for a job. They are often willing to invest the time and energy when they are confident that a student is serious about learning more about the business.
According to Iowa law, students in unpaid work experiences fall under the worker compensation coverage of the school district, worker compensation is the responsibility of the employer whenever the student is paid. A copy of this law will be provided upon request.
