The iCare program (Introducing Children to Acceptance through Reading & Education) which began in the Mansfield Public Schools is free to all school districts. The program has been very well received by both students and faculty alike and is gaining tremendous momentum. Currently, 37 schools in Massachusetts and 12 other states use the iCARE program as part of their curriculum.
This volunteer readers program promotes understanding, acceptance and inclusion of students with differing abilities through literacy connections and class discussion via story-specific questions and answer cards that are provided for each book.
Trained parent volunteers read to classrooms during the winter months. Volunteers read books from a special selection of pre-approved books. The volunteer reader training takes about an hour.
