K-2 Summer Reading

Research shows that reading over the summer can prevent the "summer slide" and help your child enter school more prepared and confident in the fall. Children who read at least 20 minutes a day see gains in their vocabulary, background knowledge, and comprehension! So, we encourage you and your child to make reading a daily part of your summer routine. 

Here are 5 ways you can keep your child reading this summer! 

1. Sign up for a summer reading challenge! Check out the NN Public Library and Book It challenges.

2. Use the book lists below to explore new authors, topics, and genres. 

3. Find a Little Free Library in your area to borrow books. Most of our elementary schools have one right outside their front door! 

4. Read books online! Students can access digital books through Sora.  

5. Join a book club or community like Biblionasium! You can even start a book club of your own with family and friends! 

The 2025 Summer Reading Book List was created by the Association for Library Services to Children (ALSC), a division of the American Library Association (ALA). Titles on this list were selected by members of ASLC's Quicklists Consulting Committee.
