Responsive Teaching and Learning Process

When a student experiences difficulty with academics or behavior in the regular classroom, early identification and intervention is critical to future success. When a teacher identifies a student experiencing difficulties they will set goals and implement strategies/techniques to assist the student resolve challenges. The responsive teaching and learning process is overseen by three school-based teams; the teaching and learning team, the service delivery team, and the program planning team. The work of these teams promotes a collaborative and inclusive learning environment. It is a tiered approach to learning used by the teaching and learning team to ensure that the literacy, numeracy and social emotional learning needs of students on prescribed curriculum are met. The teaching and learning team collaboratively monitors student progress and plans strong universal instruction for all students. To meet learning goals, some students will need additional support provided by targeted intervention, and a few will need additional support provided by intensive intervention. For some students, the provision of intensive intervention in addition to universal instruction is insufficient to address their personal learning goals and a consultation with the the service delivery team is required. The service delivery team may suggest additional strategies to the teaching and learning team, or it may refer the student for a comprehensive assessment.

Before a student is referred for a comprehensive assessment teachers will ensure that children have their vision and hearing screened by the Community Health Nurse or specialist.
