Robin's Bio

Robin Short was an award-winning sports journalist and author who helped build support for, and celebrate the achievements of, local athletes in his work for The Telegram daily newspaper.

Robin was passionate about sports in Newfoundland and Labrador and worked tirelessly to promote it his whole working life.

As Telegram sports editor, he was highly respected as a go-to expert on sports in this province, and he followed and publicized local athletes’ accomplishments on the local, national and international stages, including NBA, NHL Drafts, Stanley Cup Finals, Winter Classics, World Curling, and Olympic Games. His excellent coverage helped engender loyalty and pride among fans and helped build a sense of community.

Robin was a community builder as a volunteer in sport, as well. He shared his enthusiasm with countless children over the years, in hockey, baseball and basketball.

Robin was a fixture in the local high school basketball league. His son Cameron played, and he became passionate about the game. His love for basketball was evident as a coach, convener, and organizer. He was a mentor to many youth, an advisor, encourager, and advocate through the sport.

Robin was diagnosed with a Glioblastoma brain tumour in October of 2019. After two craniotomies, rounds of chemotherapy and radiation, Robin continued to coach basketball, organize teams, tournaments, and leagues.

His work as a builder, was built on his belief that sports was a foundation for leadership, socialization, confidence building, and life. He believed in giving youth opportunities to play, regardless of socio-economic status.

Robin Short passed away from complications due to Glioblastoma, on August 29, 2021. He was 56 years of age.
