At the end of this lesson, your students will be able to locate the More Options menu, locate Layouts, and set your layout to suit the purposes of a given Meet.
The More Options menu (3 vertical dots - "snowman") can be located in the far right of the Toolbar. Click there to view a menu of Meet Options and Settings. The two options that we will be exploring are Change Background and Change Layout.
You can choose to change your background from within a Meet by going to the More Options menu and clicking on Change Background.
You can also control the layout of our Meet from the More Options menu by clicking on Change Layout. Google Meet allows participants to choose from four different layout styles (Auto, Tiled, Spotlight, Sidebar). By default, Google sets the layout to Auto, which will highlight whoever is speaking, however, participants can choose and set the layout that they prefer.
This is the default layout when a meeting is created. Google Meet decides the best layout for the meeting depending on the content being shared and the participation of attendees (and will switch the layout throughout the meeting as necessary).
When there is no presentation this layout can display up to a max of 49 participant tiles at once. Keep in mind that if you have 49 participants all with their video feed on, depending on your internet, this may cause video and audio to lag. If there is a presentation, the presentation will take up a large portion of your window while keeping the most active participants to the right-hand the side.
This layout style is used to only highlight the participant who is actively speaking or presenting. This is the best choice of layout if you have one main speaker/presenter.
Sidebar is similar to Spotlight as it highlights the participant who is actively speaking or presenting in a large tile in the center of the screen, however, it will also highlight other active speakers (max ~4-5) along the right-hand side of the video feed. This is a good option if you have one main presenter sharing their screen, but you'd also like to see their face as they speak.
Now, have students change their Background and Layout when they are in a Google Meet.
