Mr. Craig Gilbert

Hello,

Glad to have you drop by to Curriculum Night. My name is Craig Gilbert and I am the Department Head for Social Studies here at Gander Collegiate.  I have been lucky enough in my career to teach for 27 years at great schools here in central Newfoundland. This is my 16th year at GC.  I have completed a B.A. (Honours in History and English), a B.Ed. (Intermediate and Secondary) at Memorial University as well as a M.Ed. (Curriculum and Instruction) at the University of New Brunswick. I am a husband and the father of two children who have graduated from GC.

One of the things that I try to impart on my students in Social Studies, is a love of history. Part of that is the "This day in history..."  that I put up in my class each day to start a conversation about various events in history, from the earth shattering to the mundane, all is fair game.  This day in history... September 23, 1884 a ship runs aground in Tierra del Fuego and they happen to find gold on the beach (talk about luck) sparking a major gold rush.
