There are many ways to estimate decimal numbers. Here are four ways to choose from!
Using Base 10 Blocks to Multiply Decimals:
1) First, look at the decimal number and represent it with the base 10 blocks. In this example, In this example, 2.13 is represented by 2 flats, 1 rod and 3 cubes.
2) Next, look at what your decimal number is being multiplied by. Repeat drawing the image you created that many times! In this example, 2.13 is being multiplied by 3. So I drew my image 3 times in total.
3) Finally, count how many blocks you have in total! In this example, there are 6 flats, 3 rods and 9 cubes. The answer is 6.39 !
4) Sometimes you may have to do a fourth step! After you have repeated your Base 10 drawing the correct amount of times, check to see that each section has less than 10 blocks.
5) If there are 10 or more of one type of block, exchange 10 of them for one of the next biggest model. Then count to find your answer. In this example, there were more than 10 rods. So I took away 10 rods and replaced it with one flat. There are 7 flats, 4 rods and 8 cubes. The answer is 7.48 !
