Fluorspar from Saint Lawrence Newfoundland

It's important to my family because my great-grandfather worked in the Saint Lawrence mines during the 1940s to 1950s.

My great-grandfather extracted fluorspar for a living to support his 8 children. Many of the men who worked in the mine, including my great-grandfather, later died from inhaling the fumes from the fluorspar extraction. They were not properly equipped to mine. The rock was mined roughly around the 1940s and was passed down to my father, from his father.

This artifact is important to me because it reminds me of the time, they didn't have the resources or the research to know that mining the rock would kill.

C'est important pour ma famille parce que mon arrière-grand-père a travaillé dans les mines de Saint Lawrence pendant les années 1940 à 1950.Mon grand-père extrait du fluorine pour gagner sa vie afin de subvenir aux besoins de ses 8 enfants. Beaucoup d'hommes qui travaillaient dans la mine, y compris mon arrière-grand-père, sont décédés plus tard à cause de l'inhalation des fumées de l'extraction de fluorine. Ils n'étaient pas correctement équipés pour travailler dans les mines. Cette roche a été extraite vers les années 1940 et a été donnée à mon père par son père.Cet artefact est important pour les hommes parce que cela me rappelle qu'à l'époque, ils n'avaient pas de ressources ou la recherche pour savoir que l'extraction de la roche les tuerait.
