MAKKIPOK!

Labrador Inuit Music for Passiontide and Easter

More than 200 years ago, Moravian missionaries introduced European classical music to the Inuit people of Labrador. Lady Cove, joined by Newman Sound Men’s Choir and the Newfoundland Symphony Orchestra Sinfonia, will perform 18th century classical music revived from reconstructed original manuscripts found in the churches of Nain, Hopedale and Makkovik. You may hear some familiar tunes by composers you know well but, with text transcribed in the Inuktitut language, they take on a wonderful perspective that is treasured in the Inuit communities of Labrador.

Featuring Deantha Edmunds, a classically trained Inuk soprano, and paying tribute to the memory of Karrie Obed, the tradition-bearer and lead tenor of the Nain church choir, Lady Cove is privileged to have the opportunity to honour the traditions of our northern neighbors in this culturally enriching experience. Don’t miss this chance to experience this musical tapestry inspired by the Big Land!
