Leary's Brook Junior High follows a seven-day cycle. Students have been provided with a schedule that shows what classes they have on each of the seven days. To find out what day of the cycle it is, you can use this calendar.
Our teachers have a variety of ways of communicating academic progress to families. We have three reporting periods a year. These are the dates are report cards will be released:
Term One - December 3, 2021
Term Two - March 18, 2022
Final Report Card - June 23, 2022
Teachers also use Google Classroom to post assignments, announcements, review material etc. As a parent or guardian, you can sign up for summary updates for Google Classroom by contacting one of your child's teachers. Once you are attached to your child, you will be for all classes and for future grades.
For our Grade 7-9 students, marks are updated on PowerSchool regularly so families can check academic progress throughout the school year. In order to access your child's log in information, please contact the school (e-mail melissareardon@nlesd.ca) to get access.
During lunch, students have the opportunity to be served a nutritious and affordable lunch by the School Lunch Association. The School Lunch Association operates a non-stigmatizing program that provides hot, nutritious lunches to children, regardless of their families ability to pay.
This has not started yet, but should be up and running in October. For the School Lunch Association, ordering and payment is done online at https://orders.schoollunch.ca/SchoolLunchAssociation/. In order to avail of the program, registration is necessary each year and can be done at https://orders.schoollunch.ca/SchoolLunchAssociation/#register
During the lunch break, Grades 7-9 students may leave the school property while Grade Six students must remain in school unless picked up by a parent or guardian. There is a lot to do in our school during lunch - students have access to the gym, Library Learning Commons, cafeteria and more!
At Leary's Brook Junior High, we welcome a strong family-school partnership in order to create the most optimal learning experiences for your child. Here are a few ways we will connect throughout the year:

Our school has a variety of athletic groups including volleyball, basketball, cross-country running etc. We also have Band at all grade levels and a Choir program. In addition, there are frequently opportunities for other extracurricular activities including STEAM/Coding Club, Student Leadership, GSA, Chess Club, etc. To find out more about our extracurricular activities, stay tuned to the Morning Announcements where this information will be posted.
We are cognizant of the Covid-19 pandemic and students and staff work together to stay safe and keep us all healthy. As per the Chief Medical Officer of Health's direction on September 17, 2021, masks are mandatory for students and staff unless eating or participating in physical activity. We are also encouraging good hand hygiene practices and all students and staff are asked to self-screen each morning for Covid-19 symptoms using the Self-Screening Questionnaire.
