We hope everyone enjoyed the Easter/Spring Break and we are back in full swing as we keep very busy with learning here at Vanier.
Please mark your calendars with the dates on the left and check our Vanier website regularly as further dates will be added.
We held a very successful Scholastic Book Fair and we thank families for your support, and all the volunteers. Proceeds from the Book Fair are re-invested in the Library so new titles will be available on our library shelves in the next little while. Family Night was well attended again this year and it was wonderful to see so many who were able to attend.
We participated in Education Week and Dart Outdoors - We thank Ms. Shortall for all her work in organizing fun and active outdoor stations for Dart Outdoors and our Education Week Committee for making this week fun for our students.
A successful Food Drive for the Community Food Sharing Association was held before the break. Many thanks to Ms. Alison Parrell, as well as all who contributed within our Vanier Community.
Our Grade 6 Classes have begun the DARE program (Drug Abuse Resistance Education) with Constable Fitzgerald, an important learning opportunity which is always enjoyed by our students.
Grade 6 classes have also developed a very meaningful connection with seniors who reside at Glenbrook Lodge, which has been a very worthwhile neighbourhood outreach that has helped meet curriculum outcomes and so much more as these friendships have developed.
A reminder that there are two Professional Learning Days for staff members. On Monday, April 27, staff will be engaged in School Development work, and on Monday, May 11 (this date subject to final approval) we plan to hold our follow up School Development planning day. Please note, there is no school for students on these days.
We have been successful in receiving funding from Whole Kids and there is a plan to remove the vegetable garden boxes that are currently in place, and replace them with metal boxes. This work will be done over the next few months and we will be seeking volunteer assistance to help with removal and rebuild. If you are able to help please reach out to tinamaloney@nlschools.ca and we will add your name to our list of volunteers for the upcoming event.
As some families are aware, Ms. Kinsella is currently on leave from her position, and we are all wishing her and her family the very best in the coming months. Ms. Christine Caines is currently replacing Ms. Kinsella in 1E. We also have Ms. Juanita King who has returned as Evening Custodian - welcome back, Ms. King! Ms. Nevaeh George is completing her internship in Kindergarten English and we are very happy to have this former student back in our school!
Our final KinderStart Session will take place on May 1. There will be no school for regular Kindergarten students on this day due to our KinderStart session. For any students who are age 5 by December 31, 2025, these sessions are for you! Again we thank families and our KinderStart Team for your work with students this year to make our program a successful one.
Registration for Kindergarten (2027-28) will be held starting May 13 for French Immersion and English programs. Online registration will begin promptly at 9 am on Wednesday, May 13th for our area, and end on Thursday, May 14th. Please note, this is for students who will turn 4 by December 31, 2026, and enter Kindergarten in September 2027 (turning 5 by December 31, 2027).
Please note, registration for French Immersion can be in high demand, as by NLSchools policy we service families from our school boundary, but also families of neighbouring schools where French Immersion is not offered.
Virtual information sessions for French Immersion will be held on April 28th and April 30th at 7 pm. For more information, and the link to the information sessions, please go to the NLSchools Kindergarten and KinderStart Registration Information website.
This will be held on June 1. We are currently looking for family and community members who would be willing to run short workshops/activities with students during the morning. Classes will rotate through different stations, each focused on a different country or culture, giving them a chance to learn and experience a variety of traditions. We would love to have you involved, and you are welcome to choose any activity or topic you feel comfortable to present (e.g. a craft, game, song, information about culture/traditions, etc.). or anything you think students would enjoy and learn from. If this sounds like something you would be interested in, please reach out to ericabateman@nlschools.ca or tayebehsohrabi@nlschools.ca , our English Language Learning Teachers.
We are so thankful for the work that our volunteers do for us. Sometimes this is on a short-term basis (chaperoning for a field trip, for example, or helping with the Book Fair) and sometimes it is on a long-term basis (working in the library, nurturing the Vanier Garden, caring for the environment, coaching a team, creating delicious soup on Soup Day, working on School Council, serving Breakfast Program, etc...). Please know every gesture, large or small, of support is appreciated, always.
A school community is built on the relationships we have with our students, families and community members, and we feel very fortunate indeed to have the support of so many volunteers and community members at Vanier.
The Vanier Staff thanks you for all you do to help our school be a joyful place of learning. Thank you for helping us live up to our school motto 'Be the best you can be ~ Fais de ton mieux !' We wish all our volunteers a Happy National Volunteer Week! Please keep an eye out for our annual Volunteer Appreciation Event to be held in June. We hope to see you there!

Our Kindergarten to Grade 6 choirs are busy preparing for the Rotary Music Festival. Each student choir group will perform a selection of three songs to be adjudicated by two visiting clinicians. These clinicians will then workshop each choir for 20-30 mins. The clinic/performances are open to the public. Entry fee is by donation to the Rotary Music Festival which can be done online ahead of time or in person. The suggested donation is $5 for a single clinic or $10 for multiple unlimited clinics (if you have students in various groups). Online donations for entry can be made here (purchase entry here).
Permission forms and fee payment for busses will be available through Rycor soon. All clinics are held at Memorial University School of Music. Please check the Important Dates section for each grade level assigned time. Please note, these times and dates may be different from what is posted on the Rotary website. These clinic dates are the correct ones to follow.
We thank Mr. Doucet and staff for all their work in preparing for the Festival!
Our Band students in Gr. 6 are preparing with other schools (MacDonald Drive Elementary, Rennies River and Mary Queen of Peace) to combine their sound as one at the Rotary Music Festival. This is a very exciting time for our musicians and their Director. Rycor will be used for permission forms and payment for these performances as well. Dates have been added in our Important Dates section. We are very thankful to Ms. Sullivan, who will host after school practices in preparation for the Strings/Band performances. These performances are also open to the public and held at the MUN School of Music.
During the Easter/Spring Break, National Assistant Principals Week was held from April 6-10. And on Wednesday, April 22nd, we celebrate Administrative Professionals Day.
We are so lucky at Vanier to have Ms. Hurley as our School Secretary, and Mr. Keenan as our Assistant Principal. These highly talented professionals juggle many tasks every day and they always make us and our students smile! From band-aids and purchasing to schedules and substitutes, they keep us well organized and on track.
Thank you both for all you do!
