Speech and debate is an OSAA governed activity that includes thirteen events that are acting based, some are informative or persuasive pieces that are written by the student, or are debate based. The team attends about two tournaments a month (held at high schools and colleges around Oregon) from September to April during a normal season. Workshops and fundraisers happen all year long. The competition is for both boys and girls, and is divided by experience. Students are expected to provide professional dress clothes and shoes, money for food at tournaments and a portion of hotel costs at overnight tournaments. The team practices from 4:15-6pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays and all practices and tournaments are currently completely online. To be academically eligible to participate in an OSAA sponsored activity such as Athletics or
Speech/Debate, a student must be enrolled full-time (signed up for 5 classes) at Neah-Kah-Nie
High School and must have passed four of five classes the preceding trimester. Incoming 9th
graders are automatically eligible to participate 1st trimester upon enrollment in the fall.
However, after first trimester, ALL students must meet eligibility requirements to participate.
It is noted the above is the minimum eligibility requirement.
A coach may require a higher standard for his or her athletes or participants.

Students participating in any Sport and/or Speech/Debate are required to complete an
Athletic Permission form, providing verification of medical insurance coverage.
For those students without medical coverage, or those students wanting additional medical coverage,
Student Insurance may be purchased by the students’ family. Forms are available in the high school
office.
