9th Grade Honors English

Required Reading For All Students Taking Honors English 9 During The 2018-2019 School Year

FIRST: Please select one of the two books below to read this summer.

Monster by Walter Dean Myers

American Born Chinese by Gene Luen Yang

Second: Read To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee

Monster, American Born Chinese, and To Kill A Mockingbird are available in local libraries, in bookstores, and online (Amazon.com). It is recommended that students purchase their books as they will need to have them in class for discussions, assignments, and projects. It is imperative that students acquire the book in plenty of time to read it over the summer. It is not recommended to wait until the week before school starts to purchase the book or read it.

NEXT: Respond to at least two of the writing prompts below regarding the two books you read. Each response should be at least one complete, well-developed paragraph (7-10 sentences). Academic honesty is expected and the New Kent academic policies will be followed.

Prompts:

  • What did you like and/or dislike about this novel? Support your answer with at least one specific example from the text.
  • Describe someone or something you would like to know more about in the novel. What about this person, event, or place intrigued you? What more would you like to know?
  • Explain a connection you made between the novel and present day events or another novel that you’ve read. Use at least one specific example to support your connection.
  • Explain any new insights or understandings that you have after reading the novel. What did you learn? What were a few learning lessons found in the novel? Include at least one specific example from the novel.

Your response may be typed or handwritten. You may use the Google Doc template below to record your response. After opening the Google Doc, select File and then Make a Copy. Give the new document a title with your name in it.
